Nasal Pillow Cleaning - P10 Nasal Pillow

Post by JLROhio » Sun Aug 15, 2021 6:06 pm

Someone once asked about cleaning a P10 Pillow...
Here is a quick video of my cleaning the pillows portion of the P10.
I just use simple Dove bar soap to clean my pillows. This set of pillows has been in use for probably a year or so...

Note, it's a quick video...I had already cleaned it multiple times, practicing for the video...this is the Readers Digest condensed version!

On another note, what is this baking soda / boiling water question that was being asked in the prior thread?
I also have extra P10 pillows that I don't use (due to not my size)...I could create a video of that too?

Some years back someone did some experiments cleaning mask cushions with baking soda and boiling water.

https://www.cpaptalk.com/viewtopic.php? ... il+cushion

It works....sorry but all the pictures showing the remarkable change are broken links now .

Now I did try this on some Swift FX pillows.
First with tap water...remember I am on a well and lots of minerals...ended up with a cloudier pillow than I started with.
So I decided to try with distilled water for boiling as well as rinsing ....man those pillows were crystal clear.

I will repeat what I said back then....attempt this experiment ONLY IF THE CUSHION OR PILLOW WAS DESTINED FOR THE TRASH CAN at least until you get the hang of it.
Too easy to screw up and maybe burn the cushion...and if your water is hard like mine....use distilled and you will like the results.

I do think Palerider might be doing the P10 boil experiment tonight. I got some sort of picture that looked an awful like someone was cooking P10 nasal pillows.

My only concern with doing this cleaning trick was the rim plastic part of the P10 that clicks into the frame. I didn't know what the heat would do to it. Probably nothing but I never wanted to advise doing something that I didn't know was safe for the gear and I just never really needed to.

The baking soda and boiling trick (all explained in the link) might really help with full face cushions which was what the original pictures showed. It was remarkable...crystal clear and people reported brand new tackiness.
So something to do to try to prolong the life....but make sure it was going in the trash anyway just in case something screwy happens.

Yep, he was cooking pillows. He didn't know about this thread to post in...so here is his thread.

Ah well...I'd say they're duplicate threads...But...as we learned in Science Class, the scientific method has to be repeatable!

So...Here's some "repeatable" pics of PaleRiders experiment...

Notes:
I used a New Pillow - straight out of the box
I used distilled water.
I used 1/2 Tablespoon of Baking Soda
I boiled my pillow for 10 mins in a rolling boil
I cooled down my pillows under cold running tap water

Result:
No plastic was melted or damaged during the 10 minute boil test
I connected the pillow to my existing P10 headgear and it clicked on just fine
That typical new smell that comes from new ResMed equipment was NOT noticeable (benefit!!!) :D

Thank you guys. I just love good science.

Now when I did the experiment with the Swift FX pillows I think I did it with 4 or 5 pillows and one was really, really orange/yellow looking because it got stuck in my dresser drawer and I forgot about it for months and months and it aged yellow really bad...wasn't ever really used. The others had been used for several months in 2 week rotation and they were quite cloudy. Once I did the distilled water thing....much less cloudy. I suspect the cloudiness was just a build up of my hard water minerals in my tap water.

The boiling didn't remove the yellowing....but then I didn't expect it to ...but I was sort of hoping I had stumbled on a miracle fix for just ugly yellow cushions.

I wish those old pictures still had working links. The before and after of big full face mask cushions were remarkable.

Now, the next question, if you boil an old one, does it clear up the silicone like it did in previous experiments by others. The ones I boiled weren't really discolored much, but they seem to be clearer after boiling.

I will poke around today and see if I have an old P10 that is discolored a bit and really cloudy and see if cooking it helps.
It's been a while since I used the P10s and I don't know if I have an old one stashed away or not.

I don't know...but lets find out...if we can.

Today, I took my year old pillows (Medium size - that I just wash with Dove bar soap weekly) and put them through the 10-minute boil test, along with the Large pillows I boiled last night.

First, I don't exactly think my year old pillows are really discolored much. The Large and Medium pillows seem to have different coloring on the border to begin with.

Anyway, here's the pics...

Here's the pics before boiling...
