Is my humidifier toast?

Post by old dude » Sun Aug 17, 2014 7:35 am

My PRS1 760P humidifier has suddenly stopped using much, if any water overnight. I also noticed that upon awakening the little round plate inside the humidifier is cold to the touch. I have the "System One Humidification" set to "on" and the level set to the max of 3. Both settings were done with the heated hose in place.

Is there something I'm missing or has the humidifier just gone belly up on me? The entire machine is only a couple of months from new and it has been working fine up till now.

Does the heated hose have anything to do with the humidifier itself? I was just wondering if the hose went bad it would maybe signal the humidifier to stop working, but I hate to pop for a new hose on speculation.

Thanks all.

Have you by chance had a lot of rain lately where you live? If so, the ambient humidity may be high enough that the machine's sensors are thinking "humidity is high enough so I don't have to add much more".

You can see if the heater plate is working though just by testing it now. Use either the preheat function or just use the machine for 10 or 15 minutes and then pull the chamber out to see if the bottom of the plate is warm to touch.
Touching it in the AM may nor may not catch it during a warming cycle.

I don't know enough about the machines to have an answer for this, but one thought I have is that my humidifier has been using hardly any water at all this summer... in the winter, it ran dry every single night. Minnesota and your southeastern area do have very different climates, but is there anything unusual about your current weather that might be causing it?

Now using AirFit F10 mask; Quattro Air is backup mask. RemZzzz mask liners with both.

I spent about $2 on a cheapie humidity gauge, and if the RH is on the high side of the "comfort zone",
I use hardly any water. If the needle is lower than the "CZ", more water is used.
--like when the furnace is running.
Under 15%, (in the winter) I may have get up and add water.
(Of course, it's a short hop to my distiller.)

It has indeed been raining here in GA more than usual it seems.

RH inside the house has been running around 41%.

But as I recall, the same type machine does use some water at our house in the FL panhandle where the inside humidity can run as high as 70%.

That is a good point for others to remember.

No matter what the outside humidity is, the inside humidity could be quite less depending on your cooling system.

Where I am, the outside humidity is currently 92%.

Humidity inside the house is only 47%.

That will probably drop down to about 41% tonight after no one is continually opening the doors to go outside.

So, even though the humidity outside might still be 92%, I do use about 3/4 of the water each night because of the low inside humidity.

Yes, I could just leave some windows open to avoid using my humidifier, but going without the A/C is not an option.

With that 92% humidity outside, there is also a 90 degree temperature.
Although the temperature will drop at night, that is still too much of a "mug factor" to not run the A/C.
