Can't sleep on right side

Post by Napnea » Tue Aug 12, 2014 10:23 am

For some reason if I turn on my right side to sleep, the pressure leaps dramatically and the mask starts hooting and honking until I turn back on left side (which is my usual side)
This lack of being able to change sides is a MAJOR discomfort.
Ordinarily I turn on right side to get ...back... to sleep if I'm restless or fed up with left side.

(Male, 74 yrs old, 6', 250 lbs down from 354 a few years back
but plateaued against further loss anything short of starving.

Upper moderate apnea.

Presently on titration (test) machine Resmed S9 for the evaluation week.
Have swapped masks trying for best fit. Start pressure is 8 cmh20.)

I answered in your other thread, but the fitting tips in my blog will give you some ideas on how to adjust a mask for side sleeping (hint: LOOSEN the straps slightly on the right side, tighten slightly on the left side, and use the pillow to "snuggle" your face into to help with little leaks that spring up). Make sure your hose isn't kinked or otherwise in a bad position when you lie on that side. A hose management system helps.

I...think.... I'm trying that.
But the pressure is rising SO high (compared to left side) that it honks and blows and tries to lift off.

Hmmm.... maybe I haven't tried loosening the right side.

I'll do that.

I've done up the sides till I think I'm gonna squoosh my head. I'll try loosening.

Maybe super glue.

Maybe try Lansinoh on the mask where it touches your face.
A tiny bit is fairly sticky--like gasket sealer.
They sell it near the baby/nursing stuff.
(yes, it is nipple goo)

Do you use a hose hanger so that when you turn over there is no tugging on the mask?
Is this happening towards the end of ramp time (if you are using the ramp feature)?
Are you letting the mask be pushed by your pillow?

Are you using the mask fit feature so that your mask is fitted for leaks at a higher pressure?

Even though your current mask and machine are temporary, could you fill out the equipment profile? That would give folks a little more information.

Do you have a copy of your sleep study? Can you get one?
It contains valuable information for you.
Hang in there, it will get better.

NO! And that's why I'm not ordering my machine til I get some info.

I better be able to get it.

You can ask for your sleep study now. Your Dr. should give it to you. (Actually they are required to if you ask but some aren't cooperative)

Sounds like your machine might be fully data capable. If you want to see what is going on you can run software to see your nightly sleep results.

Just let everyone know and you'll have plenty of people that will try to help you install the software.

I doubt I could get the study yet.
There is still one more night to complete the 7 day study.

Just getting ideas of what to ask for

I guess I misread what you wrote. I thought you were saying you were doing your titration study. I see you said you were using a titration machine, a Resmed S9.

Not funny! I superglued my fingers last week doing some dumb thing or other, and after applying every conceivable thing in the house, I ended up using sandpaper. It worked! So maybe I no longer have prints and can rob a bank!

Go to the medical secretaries office at your Kaiser facility and request a copy of your sleep study and the narrative report. Those should be done since you were referred on for the titration study. Sometimes they will give it to you on a disk. You may have to pay a small fee (a few dollars).

You have a right to it by law, but navigating Kaiser's system is sometimes challenging. You probably haven't even met the sleep doctor (and probably never will), but be nice to the techs in the sleep lab--they are your new best friends. They're really the ones running the show in the sleep department, the doctor is only there to sign off on what they do to comply with state and federal law. If you're nice to them, and you need something, they will help you. Your primary care physician won't be much help because he/she does not work in that department.

You didn't misread. It was my thinking that the titration part IS the sleep study.

It looks like I am premature on my questions in this forum.

Boy, that is the truth. My primary guy deferred to the sleep lab for a previous question about apnea (???)
And that info is good.
However my primary doc is now "out" til 8/25 so getting the sleep test (if I'm asking for the right thing) won't be coming from him til then.

Oh well.
