Alternative to Mirage Active Nasal Mask?

Post by Justin Case » Mon Aug 11, 2014 11:05 pm

I can only purchase a new xPAP including mask once every 5 years as per my insurance company's rules. I am long overdue. It's been almost 10 years now. I had a heckuva time in trying various masks, nose (nasal pillows), full face masks, early on, but I always came back to the Mirage Activa Nasal Mask. While not ideal, it allows for my movement when sleeping and it helps having the extra seal there . Yes, there are masks leaks throughout the night around the forehead and side that I usually have to adjust. The mask isn't perfect, but ok I suppose.

Now that I will be purchasing a new XPAP machine, I should also buy a new nasal mask. I imagine technology has improved with the masks over the years,so I am wondering what have those who upgraded from the Mirage Nasal Mask are using now? I can always go back to my Mirage Activa since parts are still made for it, but the maintenance is not covered by my insurance company.

Any suggestions?
JC

I can't answer your question re what others are replacing it with, but do wonder if you've ever tried Pad-a-Cheek liners with it to help seal off the leaks?

The newest in nasal cushion masks are the Respironics Wisp and the ResMed Swift FX Nano. You might look at them to get an idea as to what they are like. Less bulk on the face and no shell to deal with.

I know I sound like a sales clerk, but I am not.. I went through alot of masks untill I found the Pilairo Q... it is damn near silent and makes a great seal on me... Give it a try and see if you like it.. it took me a couple days to get over how quit it was, I was use to alot of noise from all the other masks I had...

Every time I try another mask I come back to the Activa - but mine is an LT - just a bit different fit.

Well I am new to CPAP but have tried 3 NASAL Masks already the ESON which tore up the bridge of my nose as well as the FlexFit 407. I am currently using the ResMed Mirage Softgel which I will admint is a tad bulky but it seals nice, the dial to pull of the bridge of my nose is nice and works. I don't move a ton when I sleep so it seals very well on me with out being tight. and I have a rather full beard and mustache.
Good luck in your mask search. and of course if you look at cpap.com so many masks your head will spin lol.

The Cushions for the ResMed Activa LT do fit on the frame of the ResMed SoftGel.
So, you can buy just the Activa LT cushion to try if you like.

I was using the SoftGel & switched to the Activa LT.

In MY opinion, the Activa LT seals much better than the SoftGel - but I do NOT have either a beard nor mustache.

Intersting I will ask my Dme when I am due for a cushion if I can try that one since it fits

Thanks guys, I will try out the masks. I am sure my DME is pretty good about trying them out in the office....or at least he was last time.
