New To CPAP and sneezing

Post by Suzi2525 » Thu Jul 10, 2014 12:32 am

Hi all,
I found your wonderful site recently and I had a question about sneezing. I use a couple squirts of Ocean before bedtime and wash my nasal pillows and humidifier tank daily. Upon rising I sometimes have a fit of sneezing and runny nose for about a half hour, at its worst. This is my 9th day on the machine and I am using tap water. I don't use a heated hose and have put the humidity from 4 to 5. Is this ok and normal for me to sneeze like this, and just will take getting used to, or should I continue to try to find a solution? Thank you in advance! Suzette

The sneezing may just be the response to the humidity being delivered.
Some people need more and some people need less. If you are getting sneezing at the higher settings you might try lower settings to see if it helps or makes it worse.
I get the sneezing nasal issues if my nasal mucosa get the least bit dried out but others get it with the least little bit of added moisture. There isn't a right or wrong amount that works for everyone. It's just something we sort of have to sort out ourselves.

Might use some of that Ocean spray in the morning first thing also and see if it helps.

Not sure about how hard your tap water might but that might be an issue.
It is recommended that you use distilled water in your machine.

Tap water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The
presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk.

Distilled water is water that has many of its impurities removed through distillation. Distillation involves boiling the water and then condensing the steam into a clean container.

So that might also be part of you sneezing.

I wish you well

I used the Ocean in the afternoon and before bedtime. This morning...no sneezing whatsoever. Apparently for me, anyways, the higher humidity is necessary. At a setting of 5, it uses up most of the tank of water every nite. But if mah nose is happy...IM happy! Thanks so much for your help!

Suzi, my Dr just gave me a prescription for a new nose spray for allergies and runny nose. So far it is doing wonders for me. Its called DYMISTA, I had nasal drip in the mornings which made me cough, this has cleared me up...good luck.
