no script head gear / masks?

Post by stratapastor » Mon Jun 23, 2014 7:47 pm

For those who don't have a perscription, where do you get your attachments? I was looking at https://www.cpap.com/productpage/devilb ... -mask.htmlbut it requires a prescription.

mask, humidifier and machines all require a prescription. You can buy individual mask parts (cushion, frame, headgear) without a prescription, go to the hosts of this forum at cpap.com, look for parts and put it together yourself.

Now using AirFit F10 mask; Quattro Air is backup mask. RemZzzz mask liners with both.

Since I can't get an open box cpap from second wind without a script I guess I'll have to go to the titration study and get a prescription.

I know you are thinking of buying your own machine out of pocket and not using a DME.
There's nothing stopping you (except your deductible) from using a DME for masks. There's no law that says you have to buy a machine from a DME to be able to get masks from them.

Use a DME with liberal mask swapping allowance if you can. That way you can try different masks on their dime.
Most mask manufacturers offer 30 days per mask. Now some DMEs make their own "in house" rules and those rules can vary.
Find one with a liberal mask swapping time frame and allowance.

I have used a DME for masks (using my insurance) for over 5 years now but I have never bought a machine from them and I have bought a lot of machines. All privately and usually for less than my co pay if I used my insurance.

You can also get a RX for the mask or machine from any doctor...and use it to buy online if you wish. Doesn't have to be a sleep doctor. Got a friendly PCP? He already knows the sleep study says OSA. Just ask him for a RX so you can get the brand and model machine you want.

I do suggest that newbies use a DME for masks if at all possible because finding the right mask is probably the hardest part of all this therapy. Might as well use their dime and return policy if we can.

Strata, you should be able to find a doc who will write the Rx for you based on your sleep study report.

I've been reading all the buzz about nasal pillow masks, and thought that I might want to give one a try. Took a look on Amazon and saw a ResMed Airfit P10 for what appeared to be a good price, and no prescription. Was kind of surprised that a full mask and headgear could be had without a prescription, but it was just shipped to me. I wonder why, considering you can't buy a CPAP machine on Amazon.

Even Amazon won't go that far. A prescription is supposed to be required for the machine & masks. I guess a vendor selling masks slipped thru Amazon, but like Ebay, they won't allow a machine. Ebay is even strict on masks, they only allow parts.

Here is the Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/ResMed-Resmed-Air ... s=p10+mask

Jencat, how did you try so many masks?

Although I've been using a CPAP machine since 2001, I just joined this forum. Needless to say, there have been a few advances since my REMStar LX was built! And, I've been using the same mask (Ultra Mirage II) for 14 years as well, periodically replacing cushions, headgear, clips, etc.

Alf,

Sounds like you've been on CPAP about as long as I have - 14 years. Most of my masks I bought, a few thru insurance. I LOVE the P10! Before I found this forum, they had just changed the headgear on the mask I used for years, the IQ from SleepNet. I thought everyone lived with leaks & sores on their noses! Then I lucked into finding this forum when I was looking for another mask to replace my dinosaur. I tried new masks & since I found this forum, learned A LOT! Hope you love that P10 as much as I do. And I know you'll love the info from this great community.

I've purchased a couple masks from amazon. One did have headgear with it. The others didn't; not a problem though, they had the right headgear available.
