cpap to apap

Post by KathyJL » Wed Jun 11, 2014 11:39 pm

I've been using CPAP at a pressure of 8. I want to try APAP. It's set for 4 to 20. Any suggestions on changing APAP settings before trying it out tonight?

You'd probably be ok with 4-20 since you usually use 8, but if it were me, 4 is too low for comfort. Are you thinking you might need more or less pressure? If you think you might need more, you might want to start it at about 6 at least. The upper number theoretically should reach only as high as needed so it probably won't need changing unless you get bad leaks and the pressure keeps going up because of them. Maybe some more knowledgeable will weigh in in time for you to make changes tomorrow night.

4 and 20 are just the default machine settings and no one can really breathe at 4 without feeling suffocated. I personally would start at least at 8 because you've already been doing so on Cpap and anything much less is generally not effective anyway.

I agree kteague. 4 is probably not effective therapy.

I'd start with a narrow range of 6-10.

Well, I stayed with 4-20. Looked at my data this AM, and it looks like my low was 6.5 and my high was 9.7. And if any of you have been following my thread on my ear pain...no ear pain this AM!!!!!
I might adjust the bottom to 5 after I look at the data for a few more days. Then maybe up to 6 if my bottom consistently stays above 6. I'll adjust the top, too, after monitoring the data.
Thanks for your help, everyone!
