Taping Shut Chipmunk Cheeks
Taping Shut Chipmunk Cheeks
I got a new nasal mask (Resmed Mirage FX). It's much more comfortable than my FFM I used before, but I am having all sorts of trouble with chipmunk cheeks and air escaping through my mouth which repeatedly wakes me up. Someone suggested I try taping my mouth shut to prevent the air pressure from leaking out of my mouth. Has anybody tried this? Is it dangerous? And if it works, what type of tape should I use? I can't believe that I'm even considering this, but I'm desperate, haha.
Re: Taping Shut Chipmunk Cheeks
There are people who tape but it could be dangerous and sleep doctors do not recommend it. Buy some Listerine Breath Strips and tear one in half and put a half on each side between your moistened lips this will form a seal that you can break in an emergency but will keep air from escaping your lips.
'chipmonk cheeks will occur whether you tape or not. you need to place your tongue behind your upper teeth and flatten it and form a seal.

As an "ex taper", it is not dangerous, just a pain in the butt. If you decide to tape, 3M Blue painter's tape works well and leaves no adhesive residue. I use a Swift II and also experience dry mouth. I finally found out about and bought a Ruby Red chinstrap and wear it over the straps of my mask. It keeps the mask straps from riding up on the back. It solved the problem for me. No more dry mouth.

Re: Taping Shut Chipmunk Cheeks
there is a safer way to tape:
The ready made product is called chin-up strips, which come in two shapes and 2 or 3 different adhesive levels.
I made my own DIY version (sized down to fit me, and cut from blue tape) My patterns are shown lying on a quilting template for scale.
I stick the center of a strip to my lower lip, and pull my lip up like a bulldog before attaching the ends high enough to hold.
It looks silly, but I can breathe through my mouth if necessary.

I don't tape my lips anymore since I had to switch to an FFM, but here's something that I think is kind of revolutinary that I wrote last year (I did tape my lips for at least 12 months, though). Check it out, I think it makes the taping of one's lips super safe:

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Yes, craziest idea ever ... but it works. I switched to nasal pillows and the sensation of having something against my nostrils causes me to open my mouth when I sleep. I still mostly breath through my nose using my tongue as a damper but my gob pops open just a bit and air blows through the opening and dries the inside of my mouth something fierce.davesq wrote:Has anybody tried this? A 1" narrow strip of standard duct tape provides just enough resistance that my mouth stays closed. I don't cover the entire width of my mouth but just that little strip keeps my lips pressed together all night. Works like a charm.

Whatever kind of tape you use, do a test first to determine what is compatible with your skin.
Since duct tape may be too strong for delicate skin; I recommend you start with a gentler tape
and work your way up to what works without hurting.
