Can I use both filters

Post by PreacherMan1611 » Tue May 27, 2014 7:22 pm

I have a Remstar Plus machine. Am I supposed to use both the white and foam filters or is it a choice?

It is advisable to use both filters.
The white fine filter goes in first. Make sure that the shinier side goes in, the flatter looking side is out.
Then the dark grey filter goes in on top of the white one. There is no in or out to it.

Check the white filter from time to time to see if it is dirty and set your replacement calendar accordingly. Mine gets dirty after a month so that is my replacement schedule. Yours will vary depending on conditions in your house.

At the replacement interval I wash the grey filter, dry it and put it back in. Replacement for it is six months just because.

If you use only one filter, use the gray (reuseable) one. You can't use the white (disposable) filter by itself.

I replace my white filters twice per month and wash the grey filter once a week.

Respironics says wash the grey foam filter every two weeks, and replace it every 6 months. The white filter needs to be replaced every 30 days or sooner if it gets dirty.

If you let the filters go too long without cleaning or replacement, they will block the airflow and your machine may overheat.

The grey filter is necessary to protect the machine from dust. The white filter is something of an unnecessary luxury. You breath unfiltered air 16 hours a day. Non CPAPers breath unfiltered air 24 hours a day. Breathing grey foam filtered air for 8 hours isn't going to do you any harm.

I will admit I used the white filters when I was using the PRS1, though.

I do not use the white filters; an RT at my DME (a good, private DME) told me that unless I have allergies or trouble breathing, there is no need to use the white one. I do wash the grey filter once a week.

One side has a checkered more heavy plastic covering. Is this what has to face out?

No, that is usually facing inwards...facing outwards would be the soft fuzzy feeling side. Think of what the job is...to filter out particles..the soft fuzzy side catches the particles so it has to be exposed first to the particles. The shiny slick plastic like portion stops the particles that got past the fuzzy soft part from getting inside the machine.

Some of the newer Respironics brand white filters actually have Respironics name on the shiny, slick side...that faces inwards to the machine.
