Why so much SPAM in this forum?

Post by nomad » Tue Jun 06, 2006 8:33 pm

I seem to remember when I registered having to type a set of numbers/letters to verify that I was indeed a "real person" and not a SPAM bot (I think it was this forum). What's the point of that feature if you can post as a guest?

Is there not a way to screen these people out and prevent them from cluttering the forum? Why can't there be a simple requirement to be registered and logged in before you are able to post?

i'm with this guy, on my car club forum you are required to be registered to post, and spammers get ip banned so they won't do it again so soon.

This also makes sense to me. Why don't we ask for the guest feature to be disabled to avoid spammers.

This will happen when the spammers find an open posting forum.
It usually gets worse.
Johnny evidently thinks the open nature of posting outweighs it.
One way is to require everyone to register and sign in.
In my genealogy forums I set a new persos postings as modeated and when I see s/he is legit, I will remove the limitation.
This would also prevent the guest who do not identify themselves.

This would require a person monitoring it very carefully and I guess Johnny has more important things to do, like make a living.
They clean it up pretty fast, so I guess it is not all that much of a big deal.

best forum around in any event.

You need more hose time, that was another forum, this one is open to all, and not my choice of BB software, in fact it's the poorest I've seen. But the people here and our hosts more than make up for the quirks we incounter. If SPAMMERS weren't JERKS, this wouldn't be the internet. Their will always be freeloaders to deal with, the bad thing is we need more people with permition to remove SPAM, not just Mark it. Like giving certian people a Big Red Button to push. That won't stop Bots but it will stop SPAMMER FOOLS.

My bad. You're absolutely right. But after going back and looking, the registration for this forum requires you to check a box beside the statement that reads "I am a human who wants to join the cpaptalk.com community!" Checking that box automatically unchecks the box beside the statement "I am a spamming robot who, being a robot, will never answer this question correctly and thus will be prevented from spamming this CPAP community."

But, like you said... this is a good forum with good people and a lot of good info. Spamming aside, I'm lucky to have found you guys.
