I was going to chime in and suggest your CPAP is no more important than breathing or sleeping.
But alas I am late to the party.

You have already made a wise decision, especially with your medical history.

Not familiar with the different machines, but just make sure yours isn't one that needs a little adapter piece when not using the humidifier.

The humidifier on my machine protects the "hose attachment point" which sticks out if it is not included. Protect it well.

If you have mild to moderate OSA, perhaps you might try Provent for your trips. It takes some getting used to, but may offer a solution for you.

Can I say for certain that not having the machine was the cause? Of course not, but that is my strong suspicion.

.
What happened to him? Accident related or a sudden physical issue that caused his death?
If Capt Midnight has posted on this a while ago or previously; I think the fellow passed away in his sleep. If it's the same story.

You might also want to do a test run at home without the humidifier to make sure you can handle it. When I first got my machine they refused to give me a humidifer and it was hell.

I also ride, and it's a stripped down Sportster with drag bars and single seat with no storage space. Everything I take has to fit in a backpack. If I went on a trip I'd ditch the humidifier but still take the cpap. The no humidifier part would suck, but not as bad as not having the machine. And maybe it's just me (and my obnoxious handful of a bike) but I definitely need good rest when I ride a lot. It takes a lot out of me.

Good point, over the years I have forgot the adapter more then once. A few weeks ago when visiting my Kids I didn't the heated hose for my S9 because I didn't bring the humidifer. I left the mask end adapter in my heated hose.

Another time forgot my hose, just so you know that blue airway hose works well in a pinch, and costs very little.

Ride safe

A week without CPAP, how big an issue?

Post by archangle » Sun May 11, 2014 11:01 am

There are some smaller "travel sized" CPAP machines. Generally not as good as a "fixed base" CPAP, but better than nothing.

Be careful and look at the whole package. Some so called "travel" CPAP's aren't actually that much smaller when you actually look at the dimensions. Don't forget to consider the size of the power supply, and the hose and mask.

Get organized and make a checklist so you don't end up without the power cord, hose, etc.

If possible, get a copy of your prescription in case you have to buy something like a hose while traveling.

If you're traveling with the humidifier, be sure to take the water tank out any time you move the machine. Educate your travel partners to not move the machine without removing the water tank. Take the tank out of the machine any time you leave the room so that housekeeping doesn't move the machine and ruin your machine. Take extra care that you can't pull the machine off the table during the night.

What is "blue airway hose?"

I just came back from an 8 day camping trip. I brought my CPAP with me. Our family had made reservations at a campsite and when we got there they were no utilities. No power, etc. They thought by asking if the site took RV's meant we would have power, water, etc. I barely slept the entire 8 nights. It was the worst time of my life. Now, I have a good heart, my BP is good, but I have 22 apnea episodes per hour and my O2 levels go down to 85. I will never again be without my CPAP.
