TGregg wrote:Hi all,

Been a while since I was here. Been OSA free for two years after CPAPing for five. Still have my machine (ResMed S8 Elite) with 13313 hours used and don't need it any more. The head gear is old and the rubber parts are a bit yellowed on my Mirage II mask (not sure if it is medium or large), but the hard plastic is OK. Filter's probably ready for replacement. Also have a carrying case. If someone can make it worth my while to mail it to them, they can have it all.

I used to have lots of other stuff (masks, headgear, tubes and filters), but can't seem to find it. Might have tossed it out a year ago. I'm moving so I am going through all my stuff. If I find the rest, I'll post it here.

Meanwhile, some tips for getting over this thing. At least in some cases, it can be done. The main thing in my case was to lose weight - and I can hear the sighs from the bleachers. . Not only lose weight, but in my case I had to lose a #@*&load more than I thought. My ideal weight is ~190. I probably started OSAing ~260, and shot up to ~293 before I got serious about losing weight, eating right, exercising and cutting way back on the booze. I had to get down under 210 before my OSA went away! Here I am, getting skinny, way under what I weighed years before I had OSA and I still needed that mask every night! #@*&! But I persevered and now it's been over two years. It took me about 2 years of dedicated effort and a lot of personal development.
Well with two years under your belt (or is it no longer under your belt) you have established a good direction.

However only 5% of the people maintain a weight loss of 5% over a period of five years.

Yes, leave the CPAP behind you and persue good health from now on.

And keep someone at your side to watch you. And you be aware (it really does sound like you are).

And let the shills, trolls, sockpuppets, and astroturfers here suffer a loss.

Enjoy!!!
May any shills trolls sockpuppets or astroturfers at cpaptalk.com be like chaff before the wind!

If the above PM thing doesn't work out, you could look up free/reduced cost clinics in your area. Someone who may not have insurance, or has it but the deductible is such they can't afford a machine might be happy to have even an old one.

I have to agree that you need a new study. I developed OSA AFTER losing 150+ pounds and working out. I never snored or gasped (also confirmed by my hubby), never felt daytime fatigue. I only found out because after 10+ years of crappy, if any, sleep, the doc figured I'd lose nothing with a study. Surprise, surprise...OSA.

Whether you get a study or not, I wish you the best with this. I do believe weight loss CAN lead to resolution of OSA in those cases where weight was the cause. Just by the very nature of this board we are more likely to see those for whom weight loss did not work, probably because weight was not the sole cause. What I really wish would happen is that someone who has lost weight and testing confirmed the absence of OSA, that the results could be posted here for some balance. So, if you are on this forum and are in the process of losing weight, if you get to this point, please don't forget about us.

I have lost around 18 lb since my sleep study (nearly 5 years ago). I see no evidence that my apnea is improving - I actually slightly increased the pressure to get better control over the apneas that I was getting. So, congratulations to the OP on "beating" OSA, and long may that continue. I will continue with my machine until such time as I can get a replacement without it costing an arm and a leg that I am very attached to!
