Best CPAP on market

Post by bigdude » Sun Apr 20, 2014 7:16 pm

I am in need of a new cpap machine and I want to get the best one. The first cpap I got was cheap-the DME supplier screwed me over. Is the ResMed S9 AutoSet the top of the line? I have insurance but if needed I will pay out of pocket. Thanks!

The best machines seem to be the Bipaps. People say they're more comfortable. Would like to try one myself.

I love my Autoset.
Unless you are getting a bipap, this and the P/R equivalent are the best you can get.

Since you are currently using a Respironics machine, it might make sense to go with a current Respironics machine.
While both ResMed and Respironics make excellent machines, their internal algorithms differ and users can sometimes tell the difference.

If you are going for a bi-level machine, then look at the Respironics 760 auto BiPap since it will provide a large range of options than one of their the less capable machines i.e., straight CPAP or straight BiPap.

My very detailed comparison between the Resmed S9 AutoSet and the PR System One Series 60 APAP can be found at:
viewtopic/t94287/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=82 ... 5&#p866535

In the end, either of these two machines can be considered the "best CPAP on the market".

Not far behind would be their fixed pressure, but full data siblings: The S9 Elite and the PR System One Series 60 PRO CPAP

BiPAPs require their own prescription.

If you have a prescription that says "CPAP at n cm", you will only be able to buy a CPAP or APAP if you are buying from a DME---regardless of whether it is on-line or brick-and-mortar.

That said, if you hunt long enough you may find someone selling a used, current model bi-level (PR BiPAP or Resmed VPAP) through something like Craig's list. Even so, I would hesitate to buy anything that I had not seen with my own eyes while it is turned ON. And I'd insist on a PR System One BiPAP (either Series 50 or Series 60) or a Resmed S9 VPAP.

That is a very low pressure. What was your diagnosis and what is your prescription?

This is confusing, in order to get an "auto adjusting CPAP" my script must specifically say that on it? If the doc writes me a script for "CPAP with pressure @ 6 cm" that means I can only purchase a straight CPAP and not an auto adjusting one?

Thank you for all the replies, they were really informative.

My main concern is getting the CPAP that I want from the DME. Meaning I want either the S9 Elite with EPR or ResMed S9 AutoSet with I can. Last time the DME supplier ripped me off and charged my insurance company roughly $800 then I paid another $1200 (in monthly installments) to buy it. This time I am not letting that happen. I know that my insurance covers %80 of the price.

My diagnosis is mild OSA.

I am not sure what you mean by "what is your prescription". This friday I am going to my sleep doc to get a new script because my CPAP machine is junk and I want a new one.

DMEs often won't supply an APAP machine if the RX only says one pressure...the could if they would just do it. All they have to do is set the APAP machine to cpap mode and that honors the RX. Remember an APAP has 2 modes of operation...APAP mode and CPAP mode...like 2 machines in one.
But they don't want to because they don't make as much money on the APAP as they do the cpap only mode machine.
An APAP machine is a CPAP machine with auto adjusting pressure mode available.
That's why you can buy an APAP with CPAP RX when purchasing online.

DMEs could do the same thing if they would just do it. In fact there are some DMEs who supply APAPs routinely and don't put up such a fuss about there only being a single pressure on the RX. They just set it to cpap mode.

Insurance companies pay the same for a cpap only machine or apap machine....if they make more money dispensing a cpap only machine..guess which machine they will try their darndest to sell you...and some will flat out lie.

I think I read last night a post in which someone was selling a S9 Auto set with around 300 hours. Don't know how much or who, but you might want to look for that post (unless I dreamed it?).

Thanks for the replies, they cleared up my confusion. I think I will just call my insurance company and see if they will reimburse me for purchasing the machine. That way I can purchase the one I want once I have my script in hand. Thanks again.

Thanks for the link explaining the differences between the 2 machines robysue!!

If it's not *too* much trouble, could you add something to that thread about the procedure for filling up the water tank? I had a shock when I went from the PB420e to the Intellipap - with the latter I can no longer fill it easily while it sits in my small nightstand drawer (I have to physically take the machine out of the drawer each time i need to refill it with water so it's a pain), so I'm wondering how the S9 & PR1 tanks compare. TIA

The S9 (H5i) humidifier has a door on top that flips up (release catch on front). The tank can be removed by pulling it up and out of the machine. The hole to fill the tank is on top and there is a 'full" indicator visible through the hole.
