First night of CPAP use

Post by Pbrael » Wed Apr 16, 2014 11:41 am

Thanks to all who replied to my previous post awhile back...
I finally received my machine from the DME yesterday and was able to walk out with a REMSTAR Auto A-flex Model 560 instead of the 460. Even though it is set to a straight 12cm, I have the option to use auto in the future. I also learned that the machine was a straight purchase and not a rental thru my insurance company. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
Here is a screen grab of my first night from sleepyhead. Just wondering if someone more knowledgeable than me can take a look. From what I understand and AHI of 1.27 is good, and most of my events were hypopneas (the same was occurring during both of my sleep studies). I was wondering about the leaks, but I thought a high leak rate would cause the AHI to be higher?

Your leaks are pretty big and fairly consistent and might be enough to impact therapy or the machine's ability to sense and record events or even respond.

The bulk of the night is spent above 75 L/min. Large leak territory is somewhere around 80 to 90 L/min most likely with your mask and machine...so you are pushing it for sure.

So leaks are a definite issue you need to work on. If it was only 30 minutes up there in large leak territory it wouldn't be so bad but you are up there for the bulk of the night.

If you had EncoreBasic software it would flag the large leaks for you on that leak graph.
Send me a private message if you want it but be sure to include what the operating system is on your computer...which Windows version as it makes a difference.

Alternately you can look on the machine's LCD screen to see how much time it is reporting that you are spending in large leak territory.
The on screen leak number is a % of time spent in large leak...obviously we would like to see 0.0 % but a small number isn't the end of the world. So you might look to see what it says.

Higher leak rates sometimes cause a falsely low AHI if the machine can't sense the events...you may or may not have had any apnea events during those periods of high leak. In other words they may have occurred but the machine couldn't sense them.
So when the leaks are big we don't know if you didn't have any events (which is possible) or the machine was clueless.

Straight purchase vs rental...straight purchase means no monthly rental costs...no big brother requiring compliance hours of use proof.

Sir:

All stats aside, how do you feel today? If I looked at data and numbers every morning after a night's sleep. I'd go goofy. All I think about as the 'next day' progresses is, "Do I think I am rested?"

There are mornings I awaken and seem a bit unrested only to discover in the next 15 hours that I don't yawn, participate fully in my day, and need no nap to keep going.

Good luck and God bless.
