Anyone use an F&P Icon+
I recently got a Resmed Autoset for myself. My husbad was given and Fisher and Paykel icon for the trial and he likes the design of the machine better than the resmed. I don't know much about the Icon and I was wondering if any users here have it and can give any advice? He's prescribed Cpap so he cant get an apap machine.
Re: Anyone use an F&P Icon+
I'm sure you will hear from some Icon users who love it. Well, I'm not a fan for one reason - data produced. I first bought the InfoSmart software $89. It takes quite a bit of work to get data. After 30 days (and this should be done before day 30) the software must be registered with F&P by a 'lab' meaning you need to register as 'Jane Smith's Sleep Lab' or any name you want to use to open the software. I did this sneaky little workaround because I paid for it & by gosh I was going to use it.
After all this, the data produced was not as complete as the ResMed or Phillips Respironics. For this reason I chose to get the PR S1 560. I'm very happy with it and my hubby has the same machine.
To be fair, my Icon is a great backup machine, but its straight CPAP & I don't get the better quality therapy I feel like I get from my Auto machine.
IMHO, the ResMed would be a better choice. Why won't the Dr. authorize an Auto? Maybe you could get the Dr. to agree? I was on straight CPAP for 12 years & can honestly say I get better therapy with the Auto. All I had to do was ask my Dr. & he agreed.

Re: Anyone use an F&P Icon+
We're in Ontario Canada. There's really strict guidelines to being prescribed autopap here. Our equipment is government funded for 75% of the cost. I myself met the criteria, my husband did not.
I bought the resmed s9 autoset, and I think he should get the resmed elite personally but he likes how the Icon takes up less bedside table space, and it looks less like a cpap machine. I told him I would look into it for him. We are not purchasing his machine for a couple of weeks yet.

Re: Anyone use an F&P Icon+
I use both the Icon and a ResMed S9 -- they are both good machines and both will give good therapy. As with any competitive products users will find things they like, and things the don't like so much with both machines. I think the Icon is a superior machine in terms of the humidifier system and many users like the design and smaller footprint of the machine. In terms of actual PAP therapy they seem to be a toss up, both use slightly different software algorithms, but they both get the job done well for folks with the usual forms of apnea. If data is really, really important then one would have to go for the ResMed, but if you're not a data fanatic then the Icon will give you the basic data that most will find adequate for monitoring your therapy right from the LCD screen on the machine, or with the purchase of the infosmart software (I will admit it is a shame that their software is expensive, about $89).
I live in the Denver area so we suffer here from very low relative humidity levels -- I like to run my S9 on the auto humidity setting with a temp of 84 degrees, at this setting I run the humidifier tub dry in a bit less than 8 hrs, so when I wake up in the middle of the night for a bathroom break I top off the humidifier with water I keep in a small plastic bottle on the bedside table -- it's a pain to say the least. My Icon never runs out of water even if I go beyond 8 hours on the hose, so in that respect I prefer my Icon.
Bottom line is both machines work very well, so the choice comes down to personal preferences -- your husband will not go wrong with the Icon especially if you look at the price difference between the two machines!

I own an f&p icon novo and hired the F&P Auto (which can run in auto or straight mode) and I was able to use the sleepyhead program to read my data

I use the F & P Icon in apap mode and love it. I was switched from cpap mode to apap mode due to weight loss, and I have to admit that this machine is small, portable, and comfortable. I have been getting a good night's sleep ever since I got mine. My insurance paid for the machine, I find myself well rested in the morning, and I've lost 137 lbs. while using my Icon. True, it doesn't give me the data that yours does, but since I have felt wonderful ever since starting to use it, I feel that I can accept the data it gives me because it is so comfortable and effective.jencat824 wrote:I'm sure you will hear from some Icon users who love it. Re: Anyone use an F&P Icon+
I might add one other thought..........keep in mind that I acctually like, and use, both the S9 and the Icon machine, but I am just giving some input as to some of the things I acctually prefer on the Icon.
I have the hard shell travel case that came with my first Icon that was a straight CPAP machine, it has straps so that you can wear it as a back pack. When I travel via car, or airplane I always take the Icon (now have the Icon Auto) in this hardshell case (which is still available from F&P dealers) because it is so easy to travel with and wear as a backpack, the hardshell case gives great protection for the machine in an airplane overhead, and the Icon with it's built in humidifier, and power converter makes for a relatively small unit to pack and carry, so if ease of travel is a consideration the Icon is very handy to pack and haul around.

Re: Anyone use an F&P Icon+
Since getting my APAP adjusted. & finding the right mask for me, I only look at AHI, PERIODIC % and 90% pressure metrics. For 6 months monitoring by sleep doc she is happy with my stats and I am sleeping very well. Perhaps your husband won't be a data hound and do fine without micromanaging the process. Don

Re: Anyone use an F&P Icon+
To be absolutely fair, the Icon is a good machine if detailed data is not important to you. It is nice on the nightstand & is easy to travel with (I don't have the hard shell cases, just the soft one). In the end it comes down to personal preference.

Re: Anyone use an F&P Icon+
Thanks for all the replies. I can see why he likes the Icon. Data is not important to him. It is to me and I look at the data constantly, I like the resmed for that. The easier to travel with is a good point.
