Leak rate

Post by craftcove » Mon Mar 31, 2014 1:34 am

I use an Icon premo with simplus mask. My leak rate is usually 27l/min. Is this good? I can't seem to find info on it.

Can anybody help? Thanks

I have a ResMed cpap which uses a different approach to leak data, with the mask vent rate normalized to 0. The reports from your cpap look more like the ones from the Philips Respironics cpap machines, which include the mask vent rate in the data that you see. Here's an example report that includes leak data:

From what I see about this cpap, a leak rate of 27 is good, well below "excessive leaks", so you should be getting full therapy with this leak rate.

From reading past information from InfoSmart software...Large leak territory is up around 60 L/min for F & P machines.
So your leak numbers are well within acceptable limits.

Looking on the specifications for your mask, the 27 LpM rate you are getting shows as equivalent to the normal exhaust flow for a single pressure of 6 cmH2O. If that is less than your normal pressure, your leak rate is excellent.
Do you know if the report is total leaks or unintended leaks?
If it is only reporting unintended leaks you need to add the exhaust flow rate to the reported rate to get to the total leak.
Take a look at your user guide for your mask and check out the table of exhaust flow rates for more information.

Here is a link to the guide.

FWIW...I have seen InfoSmart software reports and at 60 L/min or above it specifically flags a % of time in large leak.
At 55 L/min...no large leak flag.

My pressure is set at 8. The 27l/min is system leak.

That 27 L/min is probably real close to the mask's intended vent rate. I don't have the Simplus literature to confirm but I suspect it is real close.
Your leak line is probably fairly straight and all this points to minimal to none excess leaks at the mask level...so the 27 L/min is a very good leak number.

No indications that excessive leaks are problematic in terms of therapy.
Now if leaks, even tiny ones, are disrupting sleep then they need to be work on but only because they are disturbing sleep and not because they are throwing your therapy in the toilet.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I just have to sort out the bloating, then I should be right.

At a single pressure of 8 cm H2O, the mask leak rate is 31 Lpm so your number is really great!
Of course, the manufacturer's report on the design numbers and because of manufacturing variations one can see slightly different values in actual use. Even so, a leak rate of 27 Lpm when the mask is designed to leak at 31 Lpm is really, really good.

It means you have no significant or even insignificant leakage issues in how you are using this mask.
