Have you switched to either the S9 or the System One?

Post by millich » Sat Mar 29, 2014 6:18 pm

Hi Everyone,

I should be getting a new APAP this week after seeing my respiratory doc. Insurance has already said I am eligible.

Before I get a new one, I wanted to know: For those of you who have switched from an older machine to either the S9 or the System One, do any of you regret it? Do any of you wish you had the other machine? If so, I'd love to know why.

Thanks!

(I realize this is all dependent on my doc approving my choice and that I may have to pay extra. I don't see it being a problem though)

I switched from a Resmed S9 Autoset to a PRS1 960 Bipap AutoSV.
I wish I had stayed with Resmed because my old Resmed was near silent and my new ASV Is annoyingly noisy.
It has been suggested that ASV machines are just noisier than APAP machines.

it may be like choosing ford or chevy. i have owned three respironics machines. First two were M series. the last was a System one 750 auto w/ biflex the last 2 were out of pocket. for many years i was prescribed auto cpap by the VA. since last sleep study i was issued a S9 elite on straight cpap @10, with the understanding i would not monkey with settings , now 11
imho i would have to give the edge to the resmed machine. seems to be a little quieter & somewhat more sensitive algorithms -EPR. more useable features like looking at data when awakening without pulling sd card & the variable climate line hose variable temp settings which i really like. all around user friendly.from what i gather from other folks here ,would prefer a auto capable machine even though you may be scripted a straight cpap. i am perfectly happy with straight cpap. just depends on your needs.
good luck,
tim

I am also trying to make this decision. After learning from some of the people here that the collection of data is handled differently, I am leaning toward the System One because I don't always remember to put the card back right away. However, from what I have been reading, the S9 AutoSet has a better climate/heated hose system which is important to me since I keep a cold bedroom and want to avoid rainout.

I started with the Respironics M series five years ago. I got my new System One the middle of February. I really like it. It is quiet, and my therapy has improved with the new machine. One difference is that with the old machine, there was just apnea and hypopnea, so the AHI was simple the two ingredients. With the new machine, it measures a lot more, so a person can tell a lot more about their sleep. But the "AHI" also includes Clear Air, RERA etc. for more information as seen on Sleephead software. I read my card every morning and though my total "AHI" is more than just the total of A & H, it is helpful to see what is happening to my sleep. Both my apneas and hypopneas are both lower, often with a 0.2 or 0.7 type of number. I received the System One and like it, but I think either will serve you well. And I think you will notice an improvement in your therapy.

Previously I had the S9 auto and my husband had the system one. We both preferred the S9 although they were both good machines. To describe the difference is a little difficult, but it was somehow more gentle with the pressure changes.

I switched to the PR S1 560 & love it! I switched from the F&P Icon which I had only a short time, before that was the M Series & I don't recall the name of the machine before that, but it had a very different type of heated humidifier & I had to 'qualify' to get a humidifier. Times have changed!

If I was switching, I'd choose my PR S1 again, I love it. It is my first auto machine & I would never want to go back to straight CPAP again. The comfort of Auto is great, especially at high pressures like mine.

What pressure(s) do you use?

FWIW...I actually own both brands..it's a toss up with minor pros and cons with either machine brand but none are deal breakers.

If your pressure needs are in the teens...you might like the S9's EPR exhale relief. It's fairly dramatic so people using higher pressures and needing a bit of exhale relief might find EPR a definite advantage.
It's not like the Flex relief isn't good because it feels really natural but sometimes it's nice to have a 2 or 3 cm drop right at exhale to make things even more comfortable.

Not switching, as the System 1 is the first prescribed CPAP I"ve gotten, but I did have a different model during the sleep study at the hospital.

This is a very advanced machine, but my immediate question/concern is that the auto also means it isn't constantly blowing at the same pressure/volume. When I breathe in, it sounds off, making the pressure. When I stop or exhale, the sound stops too. Last night, that was more distracting than the steady sound. I hope to get used to it.

Your thoughts, folks?

F&P 604 brick to M series auto... to... PR 60 series auto with heated hose....... leaps and bounds better that the other two. The F&P was very quiet, but just a brick, the M series was noisy. my 60 series is quiet and the heated hose is AAAAAHHHHHH.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

I went from an S8 elite to a PR1 auto. The sound was different - not louder, just different. I turned off the exhale relief and that made it sound similar.

Blackspinner, how do you turn off the exhale relief? I don't recall seeing that anywhere in my manual.

There's a setting in the clinical setup menu for the Flex options...that's the exhale relief. Just turn it to the Off setting.
It may be something the person who supplied your machine didn't turn on patient access.
This video explains how to get to the menu and make changes.

Just scroll down a bit to get to the PR S1 video
