Lunesta and Acid Reflux
Hi,
I have been on CPAP for 13 months now with 100% compliance, however, I usually get between 3 and 4 hours of sleep per night. I started taking 1.5 mg of melatonin about 6 months in and while it helps me fall asleep, I can not stay asleep for more than usually 4 hours. I think I have had maybe 4 nights in the past 13 months where I have slept 5 or more hours in one night.
So, I went to the Sleep Doctor the other day and he prescribed me a 3 mg dose of Lunesta to be taken once before bedtime. On the first night I slept 4.5 hours and the second night I slept 5.25 hours. On that morning I could really tell a difference in my energy levels. Unfortunately, the next night I woke up after 3 hours with Acid Reflux and I was unable to fall asleep. And again last night, I woke up again with Acid Reflux and ended up with about 2.5 to 3 hours of actual sleep.
I have never had an issue with Acid Reflux before so I am not sure if it is the Lunesta or not. I was wondering if anyone on here has had a similar experience.
Thanks,
Admiral_Schmidlap

Google Lunesta side effects and see if reflux is one of them.

Well,Julie wrote:Google Lunesta side effects and see if reflux is one of them.
I had certainly not considered googling Lunesta and side effects. I guess in my sleep deprived state the most OBVIOUS thing in the world did not occur to me! Here, let me correct that right now....
<clicks on shortcut to google and enters search criteria> Lunesta and Acid Reflex...hmmm....2,910,000 results. Ok, I will be right back!!!
Whew...well that took a while. It turns out there are some instances of where people have indeed experienced Acid Reflux on Lunesta..
Well, I guess I am all done now....Thanks for the Help!

Wait, wait, don't sail off so fast! To be fair, you only asked if other people have experienced acid reflux while taking Lunesta. That's a perfectly legit question to ask here. I hope you get some responses from some of our members.Admiral_Schmidlap wrote:Admiral_Schmidlap boards his dinghy and sails sarcastically off into the night......

Re: Lunesta and Acid Reflux
I'm not sure if this will be helpful but I do take Lunesta and I do experience acid reflux from time to time. In my case however the intermittent ar predates my use of Lunesta by many years. My takeaway would be that Lunesta doesn't trigger ar since I'm clearly vulnerable and yet I haven't seen an increase with Lunesta. Of course that's just me, ymmv.
Incidentally I have found that if I eat much of anything near bedtime Lunesta tends to lose its effect.

Re: Lunesta and Acid Reflux
You could try (after googling to check on interactions *smile*) an acid reducer when you take the Lunesta. I use ratadine (cheap at Costco) with Aleve and IBUprofen, or I have bad acid reflux/heartburn.
Check it out first, since there are several varieties of acid reducers out there.

It is a helping forum, but I felt it would be just as fast for the OP to look up what he needed as it would be if I did it... and believe me I've looked up many things I've wanted answers to, just as we all have. I don't have direct experience of Lunesta or I would have compared notes.

Hmmm... Aleve or Ibuprofen gives me heartburn. Have you tried to skip it to see how you feel?RogerSC wrote: I use ratadine (cheap at Costco) with Aleve and IBUprofen, or I have bad acid reflux/heartburn.

Re: Lunesta and Acid Reflux
Hi,
Thanks everyone for the replies. I am going to skip the Lunesta tonight and go back to the melatonin and see how I feel. I would honestly rather only sleep 3 or 4 hours than wake up almost vomiting. I am somewhat nervous now for the first time in almost a year to go to bed. This sucks!
Have a good night everyone..

Re: Lunesta and Acid Reflux
Admiral, I remember your posts when you were just getting started and I'm really sorry you're having any kind of a setback. Consider tonight just an experiment, not a lifetime commitment. If you find you can't get decent sleep without the Lunesta it might be worth treating the acid reflux for a while so you can get stable with your sleep again. Let us know how it goes tonight.Admiral_Schmidlap wrote:Hi,

Re: Lunesta and Acid Reflux
What about Ambien...or is lunesta the same thing? I get acid reflux but ambien has never caused it.

Re: Lunesta and Acid Reflux
I believe Lunesta's characteristics make it most useful to reduce wakeups and extend sleeping, whereas Ambien's impact is weighted a little more towards the beginning of the night.poorflick wrote:What about Ambien...or is lunesta the same thing? I get acid reflux but ambien has never caused it.
