Full face mask & water usage
Full face mask & water usage
For years I used nasal pillows. My cpap machine (ResMed S9) would use about a half a tank of water per night. Then I switched to a full face mask, and using the same machine with the same settings, I now use almost a full tank of water per night. Has anyone else had this experience? Why would a full face mask use so much more water?
Re: Full face mask & water usage
Check your leak data with the full face mask. If leaks are greater or more pressure is used then the machine will use more water even if all other factors are the same..like ambient room humidity, hours of use, etc.
So leaks and pressures used will impact water consumption.
Which model S9 are you using and are you using heated hose?
When you have time please add your equipment to your profile like I have mine..it helps us to have an idea exactly what you are using.
Hopefully your model S9 offers full data so you can check on the leak situation and if using the AutoSet in APAP range the pressure needs with a full face mask sometimes are a bit higher than with a nasal mask and the increased pressure could explain water consumption.

room humidity as well as your pressure levels have a lot to do with water consumption. Then add in your respiration rate to the equation.
I use the Resmed Quattro FFM with higher bi-level pressures.
A typical night for me is a little over 3/4 of a tank per night. (A night consists of 6 1/2 to 7 hours of sleep)

Re: Full face mask & water usage
My water usage is totally connected to room humidity.
Other factors make much less difference.

Re: Full face mask & water usage
I have always used a full face mask (I've been using CPAP a little over 2 years) and found that the room temperature seems to have something to do with the water usage. My reservoir lasts two nights but in the summer, it lasts three or four nights. I suspect that Pugsy has a good point about leaks and the pressure you use.

Using distilled water is a pain .....I want to know if you can use the water from one of those "Pure" water pitchers..do they filter out enough of the minerals?
Re: Full face mask & water usage
Don't know why you think using distilled water is a pain, its no big deal. You can use any water you want but you run the risk of getting slime or mould in your tank. Its your choice... no one will report you to the cpap or water police because... they don't exist .jimjoerob1@yahoo.com2y2r1 wrote:Using distilled water is a pain .....I want to know if you can use the water from one of those "Pure" water pitchers..do they filter out enough of the minerals?

I empty out the water in my chamber every morning after I wake up even if there's some still in the chamber. I rinse my chamber out every day and clean it with a mild dw detergent once a week. After I let the chamber air dry I refill it with fresh distilled water for the next night. Distilled water here is not too expensive; about $0.88 a gallon at Winn Dixie and probably less at Walmart.Roger2 wrote:I have always used a full face mask (I've been using CPAP a little over 2 years) and found that the room temperature seems to have something to do with the water usage. I agree and the part at the end of your post about the cpap or water police was good.nanwilson wrote:jimjoerob1@yahoo.com2y2r1 wrote:Using distilled water is a pain .....I want to know if you can use the water from one of those "Pure" water pitchers..do they filter out enough of the minerals?
