I initially told my doctor "I don't want that thing (CPAP)" and he proceeded to tell me about other options. This was on a Thursday, and I said I would think about it, and discuss it with my PCP.... over the weekend, I researched all of the options before seeing my PCP on Monday. I came to the conclusion that CPAP is the very best treatment and that I shouldn't dismiss it w/o trying it, for the following reasons:
1. UPPP is too invasive, horrible recovery, and doesn't have a good track record.
2. MMA is less invasive, but it will move my jaw forward, change the shape of my face, and change my bite... then I might have to redo all the crowns I've invested in over the years.
3. Oral devices, including Somnodent, have the same effect of moving the jaw forward but over a longer period of time..
It doesn't make sense not to at least try the gold standard of CPAP for at least a year, as it has proven effective, and is completely non-invasive. I was bothered initially by massive leaks and the loud face farts produced by the mask that prevented me from getting any sleep. I researched again, how to control leaks, if I should find a different mask, etc. The easiest solution for me was to first try mask liners, and by golly, that was a game-changer for me. I am still using my first mask, sans face farts, and I have only been on CPAP for less than two months. Please, Brian, put some effort into this for a while and figure out how to mitigate your problems to make it work. Mask liners, different mask, different pressures, whatever works for you in whatever order you want to try them.. it could save your life.
