CPAP machine can gather dust...

Post by kona0197 » Fri Mar 07, 2014 7:51 pm

For all I care. I'm done. I'm tired of trying to make this work. I've tried to make it work for a month now. Every night the mask gets ripped off. Every day I feel worse. I've tried 10 different masks. No go with any of them. The only style I haven't tried yet is Nasal Prong. I have tried using two different chinstraps. I have tried using heavy duty sleeping pills. Nothing works. Not sure what to do at this point.

Understand what you're going through. I've been issued three machines in the past, and had the same issue you did. However, now that I'm 68, the last machine (Sep 2013) was under Medicare. I had to be compliant or suffer giving it back. OSA is something you'll never get over. Once diagnosed, you'll either sleep well and feel good if you choose to use it. Or suffer the many complications that come from not using it.

I'm just now finding out I can't tolerate a CPAP. I've got to do another sleep study, meet with a sleep specialist and possible get a different mating. This could have been determined years ago, had I used the machines.

Enough of my problems. Try watching TV, not in the bedroom, but in the family room, and wearing the mask. See if you can tolerate it while you're wide awake. Gradually using it this way, just might help to get over the hump.

Others will chime in, and tell their stories. Don't give up like I did though. I was 44 when I first started down the CPAP road.

Hypnosis - and I'm serious. But finding a good, honest, and effective hypnotist is important... and if they're good they'll teach you self hypnosis, which is easy and effective.

I do that everyday with many different masks. It does no good. It does not help. As far as compliance, I met my goal last month so the machine is mine.

My insurance does not cover that, and I'm unemployed so I have no way to look into it.

I have used a CD by Paul McKenna to get to sleep. it came in a book I Can Make You Sleep. It is sort of hypnosis. It helped my before cpap insomnia and is very, very relaxing though a little wierd. You might find it at a library to try. I put it in my phone and use it now if not able to get to sleep for any reason. Definitely used with first mask(Wisp) which I hated. I could not stand the feel of a wet cold nose and my head in a clamp. My sleep tests were so horrible my doctor thought I would never tolerate cpap. I bought my Sleepweaver Advance cloth mask online and got my DME to upgrade to the heated hose. 100% better but I still used the CD every night. I think the sleep CD helped a lot because I used it before and it was familiar.I would suggest you listen at least once without cpap then put on your mask and listen again. It works best with stereo ear buds because sometimes there are different phrases going in each ear at the same time. There are lots of other CDs that use self hypnosis and if your library has them it is easy to try others. A good Hypnotist would be best but perhaps hard to find. Don't give up.

It's no substitute for the CPAP but if you simply can't get used to it and don't give up yet you
may want to try some throat exercises. They are supposed to be able to help some.

Does your sleeping on the floor have anything to do with the issues?

I think this is your problem:

Additional Comments: Pressure: 9 to 13 (Machine automatically adjusts)

The pressure changes wreck your sleep.

For what it's worth, see if anybody has a Swift FX mask you can try. I have one, and like it, & have used this type mask since I went back on the hose in 2011. Some people say it doesn't work well with high pressure, but I don't really know what cm pressure they are referring to as too high for this mask. My pressure is set at 6-10cm on APAP and stays pretty much at 10 cm. Somebody might have an extra Swift FX they don't need, but most people who have tried it like it. They make pink straps for her and gray or blue straps for him. It is the same mask I think, but the for her type comes with Extra small, medium, and large nasal pillows, & the for him comes with small, medium, & large I think.

Please don't give up, XPAP can save your life.

Don't give up. If you keep on plugging along, one day you will realize that it is working.
It's a bit like training a child to say their prayers--do it often enough, it becomes automatic.
No matter how smart we think we are, at some level, we are all simple.
It is easiest to address our simple self; just keep repeating what is right until it "fits".
Take care of yourself, and let the anger slide away.

Time to quit complaining about your therapy and take control of it.

Accessing the Provider Mode Screens
Accessing provider mode unlocks settings that cannot be modified by the user. To access provider mode:
1. Supply power to the device. First, plug the socket end of the AC power cord into the power supply. Then plug the pronged end of the AC power cord into an electrical outlet that is not controlled by a wall switch. Finally, plug the power supply cord’s connector into the power inlet on the back of the device.
2. Once the device is powered, the Home screen appears, shown below. Turn the control wheel to toggle between the four options and highlight “Setup”.
Therapy Info Flex Setup
Home Screen
Note: “Flex” shown above will display as the current Flex mode.
3. Once “Setup” is highlighted, press and hold both the control wheel and the Ramp button on the device for at least 5 seconds.
4. You will hear a quick double beep and the Provider mode screen will appear, shown below. You are now in provider mode.

Thanks, I'll look into it. It's worth a try to see if the pressure is the issue.
