Chin strap suggestion please.

Post by ejbpesca » Fri Feb 28, 2014 1:52 pm

I use the full face, under chin Paykell 432 medium. Could some one suggest a soft but firm chin strap that just maybe will keep my mouth shut during sleep. I think my chin forces a leak by pushing out of the mask each night. I have had one but it was thin and woul not stay in place. I guess the head goes over a chin strap or visa versa?

In almost all cases the chinstrap would go over the mask, but, if you have the mask positioned properly you shouldn't need a chinstrap with a FF mask. The FF mask allows you to mouth breathe without losing therapy.

I cannot address the FFM. I've been a nasal mask or pillows for my 8 years w/CPAP. I tried 5 different chinstraps before coming to the papcap. I found most of the neoprene based straps like the Ruby lost it's support capability way too quickly. I found material twice a thick, traced a Ruby and built my own. Better, but the answer. Some people also find that chinstraps pull their chin back as much or more than they pull the chin up enough to keep the mouth closed.

the papcap was a learning process. I put the strap over my chin to start and thought I'd really been hooked by yet another bad device! Then I looked more closely to the mfg's photos and moved the strap back to the back of the jaw. It holds the back of the tongue up to block the oral airway. I love it as you can take a sip of water or yawn or cough, yet it doesnt' let the supplied air go out my mouth. I found that I wore out the elastic on the strap itself too quickly and moved to adapt it. I found that a type of surgical cap that fits my head better than the papcap for about $7. I sewed the hook portion velcro on the cap and made the strap from scraps around the house with Velstretch brand stretchy velcro on the ends. The Velstretch is tricky to find in the 1 1/2" width. My favorite fabric store has retired and closed and I'm in a current panic when my Velstrech supply runs out!!!

I've learned how much tension it takes to make my leak line achieve ZERO, 5 nights a week. It has been a game changer. When I use my pulse/ox it's interesting to see how the mouth leaks effect all the other data in Sleepyhead!!!

Good luck!!!

I tried a FFM for 2 nights, the Quattro Air for Her. I still had the problems with mouth breathing and waking up with a cold nose and cottonmouth. I was so disappointed! So I went back to my P10 nasal pillows and use a tensor bandage (as recommended by my respiration therapist). It does the best job at keeping my mouth closed. The Resmed chinstrap I had purchased just didn't work.

If you use a FFM, you can still get dry mouth. I use a chin strap when ever the dry mouth gets bad.

For users of various FFM's and Nasal masks/pillows - the following comments do not apply.
That said, for the few of us that use the Oracle 2 oral mask, a chin strap of any design is a really bad idea.
They all tend to move the jaw slightly back and cause additional obstructive apneas.
So, if you use this oral mask and still get mouth leaks, the answer is a soft cervical collar that just supports your jaw from below without moving it backward.

I use the CareFusion puresom ultimate when I need one. Have had it close to 6 years and still good as the first night I used it. Very effective and very comfortable, don't even realize it's on.

I just ordered a chin strap..Ruby type. I am a 5 year vet of cpap and still have not gotten the miracle treatment so many do. This is yet another desperate attempt to get some sleep. Once in a while, for an unknown reason I will have a fairly successful night, but most of the time not yet even though given up upon by medical pros I continue to try to get the cpap therapy.

I had my wife sew up one of these chin-cap-strap things, it works fine. I also have used a Respironics chin strap, this model works better than all of the ones that don't have the second strap across the back of your head. They will all slip forwards or backwards unless you have a flat head with no slope to it! .The Respironics' problem is that you will need additional padding, the spiral stitching in the chin area can saw right through your skin ! Brilliant, huh ?!? Good luck ! (actually, mine is pretty old, maybe they have fixed the flaw by now)
