Falling asleep at work

Post by djv1255 » Fri Jan 21, 2005 10:59 am

It has been a couple years since I was told I had sleep apnea.
I am suppose to use oxygen in addition to my CPAP machine but the oxygen machine is too noisy.

I have a new mattress.

But I am still dozing off at work and snoring.
My boss is getting on my case since we moved near the department VP's office.

My boss knows I have sleep apnea but thinks a CPAP machine should totaly prevent my falling asleep at work.

Can you get a quieter machine, or something to muffle the noise somehow? (Like, maybe get a really long pipe and put the oxgen machine inside your wardrobe so you can't hear it as much)

Because if you need oxygen and aren't taking it, then you aren't helping yourself.

c pap might not be working properly

How long have you been using your c pap? If you are still falling asleep something is not working properly, have you had an attended sleep study? sometimes if the presure is not enough, or if it is too much or if you have loose or gain weight the c pap will not work properly. Even a constant leak will interfere with the c pap. Do you still snore? most of the time a bi-pap will take the need of o2 and you will not have to use it at night time. Try to speak with your sleep doctor and let him know you are interested in having a sleep study.

I should also add that I wake up in the night and don't put the mask back on so it may only be half the night that I use the machine.

Like now, I usually would not put the mask back on.

Hi,
I started on oxygen a few weeks ago.
Yes, the oxygen machine is noisy. But mine came with a very long piece of thin tubing, making it so you could place the oxygen machine in the next room, if you wanted to. But you CANNOT place the machine in a tightly enclosed place like a closet.....very dangerous, and it won't operate correctly anyhow. DO NOT PLACE IT IN A CLOSET!

How long have you been on the oxygen? Don't give up on the cpap or the oxygen. After only a week on oxygen I learned my levels shot back up to normal, after being dangerously low. So it's good for your health. And put that mask back on! Keep up with it, or work with the doctor on getting a setup that works for you. Your health is in your own hands, not someone else's, so do try to keep at it.

Hi,
...More of my two cents...
About sleeping on the job. Take all of the above advice to heart. Clownshow is right, you need to not only improve your health but protect yourself at work. .......Dozing off at work is humiliating, unprofessional, and can cost you your job. Trust me, I know.

It is VERY important to wear the mask the last half of the night as that is when most apneas occur (and coincidentally the majority of heart attacks seen in ERs).

Your life is literally hanging on that bedpost. Wear it!

My avatar is the house I plan to build.
It will be extremely energy efficient and will be resistant to hurricanes when I move down south.
