should my mom get a sleep study?

Post by jess928 » Wed May 31, 2006 2:50 pm

So I'm in my late teens and I've been using a bipap for almost 2 1/2 years for a form of central sleep apnea. It was rough for quite a while but I seem to have it set up pretty well now. The thing is, now I'm wondering if my mom should get a sleep study to check for OSA. She's 54, and she's always snored, but it's gotten a lot worse in the last few years. Almost every time we watch TV at night, she falls asleep in the chair and starts snoring immediately. The snoring is pretty loud but there are no obvious gasps or pauses in her breathing. It's annoying, but I don't want to make her go get all wired up just because I'm annoyed. I would push her to do it though if I thought her health was at risk. Her older brother, who is 60, uses a CPAP so I have a feeling it might be in her future, but I don't know how soon. I've mentioned the idea to her but she doesn't seem to be eager to do anything about it. I really want my mom to stay healthy but I don't want to make her undergo an obnoxious and unnecessary test.....so should I push her or just hope that she doesn't need CPAP yet?

Yes, definitely encourage her to have a sleep study. If she is falling asleep that quickly when the two of you watch TV, and if she is snoring that badly "sitting up", it's probably far worse when she's flat on her back (or even on her side) in bed. The fact that you haven't noticed her actually stopping breathing or gasping may be simply because she's sleeping sitting up when you're around.

She's lucky that you see some of the possible signs and know what she should do. Sleep study, for sure!

Hi Jess!!

I'd certainly urge your mom to bring up your concerns about what you're noticing when you're both watching TV together, to a doctor that you both trust. Then, follow the advice that the doctor goves you. Maybe you and your mom can visit the doctor together.

You're a GOOD KID!!!
