You are probably in the temperate zone and a bit north of the subtropics. Semi-tropical is not defined.

Microclimates can occur anywhere that terrain or the close proximity of warm ocean currents can affect average temperatures.
The globe is not our only reference. Check the USDA hardiness zones for a more accurate picture.

I take care to get it installed right and after about two weeks, when I lift my microbial filter out, there are faint traces of dust on the inlet area (plastic) where the intake air makes it's way around the edges of the filter and into the inlet hole. Leaks around the edges of the filter, in other words, because those plastic pillars that hold the filter are just too tall, IMO. I use a wet Q-tip to clean the dust up but that's just a stopgap measure. It's gotta be getting into the machine blower.

I've never had that problem with any of my PR machines which have a much better design using the black foam open-cell filter to hold the microbial filter firmly against the intake hole.

Anyone else noticed those dust trails and wondered about leaks around the edges of the S9 filters
My husband's VPAP has this dust problem like yours, but not my S9. He sleeps with the window shut and I sleep by an open window. I don't understand why dust collects on his, and not mine, but I will try the wet q-tip.

Once you get the filter and nearby dust problem settled, you might consider turning the machine on and letting it run (unless it just shuts itself off...)

I recently noticed some dust when I took the water chamber out to refill it. I used a damp, clean towel to get rid of it and then wiped down the machine. I guess it doesn't hurt to do that every once in awhile.

And blow dust into the machine? And I'm afraid I may hurt something blowing air from the output side into the machine. Don't think so.
You might consider calling your RT at your DME unless you purchased your machine out of pocket from CPAP.com.

We did that. And the shutting it self off can be controlled. Go into settings and turn smartstart off.

Thanks for everyones input. I just hope she didn't ruin the motor by not paying attention to how the filter went in.

Hi Jeff.

This was the thought I had, too. Make sure it's unplugged and use something like a shop vac at the air intake port.

As I recall for about a hundred bucks the Accurate Biomed firm (CPAPtalk member name Accurate) will put your machine on bench test, calibrate the pressures and sensors, as necessary, plus clean the dust out of the internals. A small price to pay for peace of mind. Of course you'll need a backup machine while it's gone, that is, if you've become as co-dependent on CPAP/BiLevel/ASV as I have.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Thanks, that's good to know, and yes I'm not co but dependent on ASV. When mine died last year they gave me a bi-level as a loaner. My AHI was 53 over a 50 minute period. We really need to get a backup machine for just what you describe.

The dust won't harm the patient, it only harms the machine, and only then if a lot of it accumulates.

You're breathing the unfiltered dust in the air 16 hours a day while you're not wearing CPAP. Even without the filter, the concentration of dust coming out of the machine is the same concentration as the dust in the air you breath while awake.

As for cleaning it out, clean out what you can get to, then take off the filter, and the humidifier and run the machine for a short time on full blast. It probably won't make a lot of difference if you run it a few seconds or for a long time. It would help to set the pressure to max if you know how to do that and how to put it back to the original settings.

I think those filters are for a single night's use in places like hospitals and sleep labs. Unless you change them out each night, the humidifier will get it wet, and you now have a dirty wet sponge in the air path, just crying out for germs to grow on it.

Good for the kitty!
Maybe Kitty would enjoy sleeping in a bedroom where there were not two CPAPs running all night?
