Alpha Intrusion

Post by 2hands4u » Wed May 31, 2006 5:15 am

Does anyone here with OSA also have the presence of 'Alpha Intrusion'? If so, how are you being treated for this? Do you see a neurologist or other type of MD?
I have OSA and my CPAP is set at 10cm. I have no apparent problems using my CPAP. I still am tired throughout the day. My last sleep study said I had alpha intrusion throughout. CPAP solves the problem of oxygen levels dropping off but I don't believe that I get into stage 3 or 4 sleep because of alpha intrusion. Any ideas?

Stage 4?

Post by brasshopper » Wed May 31, 2006 9:58 pm

My last two sleep studies showed zero stage 4.

I asked and was told that it was not unusual for older people not to have any stage 4.

One of those tests was the one hour hell test and the other one had lots of technician awakenings.

There are a couple of home eeg devices which should be able to tell us about sleep stages - but they are simply too expensive for me to buy to play with.

But if my AHI still has 15 rousals an hour, how much stage 4 can I expect to get?

Alpha Intrusion

I don't know if it is the same thing as I have, exactly, but I also was told I had a lot of Alpha Intrusion. Then, on my 3red study, I was told I have Central Nervous System Hypersomnia. This means that I never feel I get enough sleep even with the CPAP. I am being treated with a drug called Provigil, which although very expensive, is pretty good at helping get me through the days! I recently refilled my RX and it is $499 for a 3 month supply. There is also Methelyn, a type of amphetimine which is much less expensive, but a pain in the rear as you HAVE TO GET A NEW RX MONTHLY FROM YOUR DR, THEN TAKE IT IN TO GET FILLED - TOO MUCH BOTHER!! I like the Provigil much better - thank goodness I get help on the RX!

Now, they don't know what caused my Hypersomnia, but it is related to (or at least treated like) Narcolepsy. The meds are the same. I see a pulmonologist for my care about every 3-6 months. Not too awful for a gal with a bunch of other junk to deal with. I can tell you the RX has really helped a lot. My husband is much happier when I actually stay awake on car trips and stuff!

It's one size fits all, unfortunately. It sorta has a bit of variation, you might Google the word Hypersomnia as it will give lots of information. I'd certainly listen to the doctor when you go in, and ask about the drugs that can be utilized. Not all are as spendy as the Provigil. It's not horrible to have this, and the RX actually helps me a lot.

I found the fact that this can run in families interesting, except nobody in my family has it that I know of. I'm a '50s Rubella Kid with several little developmental things as Mom had it in her first trimester. I'm figuring maybe this could explain things a bit.- it kinda did explain the Type 2 diabetes as I have had other problems which led to that one, lol!!!

Now if somebody could just come up with headgear that fits my Swift and allows it to stay on my head at night, I'd be happy!!!
