Heated hose TOO HOT & MOIST! Thoughts?

Post by PhilB » Sun Feb 02, 2014 10:42 pm

Hi all,

Terrific forum folks here...thanks for all the great reads so far for this new CPAP user.

So, i have been using the Pilairo Q.
Moisture seems fine.
But thought I'd get the heated hose, since it cost almost nothing as a new user with my insurance.

Am I crazy? I HATED it.
Felt like 'too hot /too moist'. As if hot humid air was being blown at me (well ....guess it was).

My doctor had said 'only get the heated hose if there's a problem'. (don't fix what ain't broken).

I figured I'd get it just in case it matters down the road (travel, etc).

So put the hose aside and went back to the regular hose (even though the One now has the heated hose electric when I want it).

Just curious if I was missing something here..

Thx much,
Phil

PS fwiw I keep the room at 71 degrees.

We are all different. You do what makes you comfortable and helps you sleep with therapy.
It's all good. Welcome. One day, you may wake up with a chilly beak and be grateful you have that hose.
(I hope you can find it--I suffer from "turn around" amnesia)

You can always turn the HH settings down or off. You don't HAVE to use heat or the maximum settings with them.

I tried heated humidity for a couple of nights when I started......didn't like it, so I shut it off and use "passover" (cool) humidification year round. That was almost nine years ago. You couldn't MAKE me use heated humidity now.

Thanks, both.

Den, just so I'm clear.
So... you DON'T have the heated humidity turned on? (i.e...there's water in the tank but heat level is set to lowest?)

(or do you mean somehow mean that heat is turned on, but the hose itself isn't heated?)

Am not sure what you mean by passover/cool humidity.

Not to stop the conversation here - others please chime in as well !

That is correct. I have water in the HH tank, but there is NO heat to warm the water. That's what they call "passover". The air passes over the water and creates some water vapor (humidity), but it's cool and not warm.

Water in the tank but no heat is added to the plate so water stays cool....air still blows over the water but without heat the amount of moisture in the air to go to mask....is minimal and that's what we call passover humidity...the only water that gets added is what little is transmitted when air passes over the water. Setting for the humidifier is 0 which essentially turns off the heat.

Heated hoses are relatively new...only been around last 3 years or so in terms of being integrated with the blower unit.
The come in very handy for some people.

Your 71 degree bedroom is already fairly warm...my bedroom drops down to around 55 degrees when it real cold outside...like tonight...it's 16 degrees right now and it's still dropping.
When the starting bedroom temp is already fairly warm....warming the air even more could be uncomfortable for some people.
Heck, at 71 degrees...I would be opening the window a bit. Way to warm my my comfort.

My point is everyone is different and each person has to find out what their own preferences are.

Which machine and hose did you get? There are ways to customize the temp and humidity delivered if we knew which one you had. There are other choices in mixing and matching the heat and moisture besides turning it off.

The following is ResMed only, but may something similar is possible on the other units.

The experienced people likely all know this but it might help someone who is new:

My DME rep showed me that even without the H5i humidifier (e.g., while traveling light) the S9 unit could accept the heated hose despite that lock/sensor/id tab that lets the full unit know the Climateline hose is in place.

To put it into the main unit where there is no slot for the special hose tab, just reverse the hose. I haven't tried it, but you could likely just reverse the hose in the humidifier too

Not that this is the "best" way to turn off the hose, or even a good way, but it is something you might need to know if you travel without the humidifier.
