S9 Hypoallergenic Filters
S9 Hypoallergenic Filters
Anyone know if the hypoallergenic filters for the S9 cause undue stress on the motor? I know many specialists suggest avoiding the fancy 3M furnace filters as they restrict air flow too much, same for the fancy s9 filters?

Re: S9 Hypoallergenic Filters
I use ONLY the ResMed brand Hypoallergenic Filters.
They are not so restrictive that they could cause undue stress on the motor.
If you are really concerned about that, let the DME substitute the "Generic" S9 Hypoallergenic filters. They ARE of a lesser quality & do not restrict the airflow as much.
By the way, the use of the 3M brand pleated filters does not restrict the airflow too much (especially if you use the lower rated ones - i.e. 800 instead of 1500). The problem arises if you try to keep them on for the rated 3 months. Furnace manufacturers suggest you use them only for 1 month, but that makes it really expensive.
I just put in a new A/C & Heating system on 11-19-13.
They put in an el cheapo fiberglass filter.
I replaced it with an 800 3M filter a month later & expect to keep that 1 in for 2 months till 2-19-14.
In my old system, I used the 1500 3M filter for at least the last 1/2 of its 25 year life & changed out the filter only every 3 months. Never caused a problem that I was aware of.
They actually sell a 4" pleated filter that has a rated life of 6 months.
I have never used 1 of those. In fact, I did not even know such a filter existed until my A/C guy suggested it. He has been using it for a bunch of his customers for quite a while. Those customers already have the maintenance contract for twice a year maintenance. For $100 more per year ($50 every 6 months), he will install & change out the 4" filter twice a year. Depending on which filters one is currently using, that equates to only the cost of the filters.
