Oh, oh, Upper REspiratory Infection coming on!

Post by Janknitz » Mon Jan 13, 2014 7:58 pm

It's "going around" and started in my lungs this time (usually these things start with a sore throat or sinus congestion or an allergy trigger). I had some asthma starting yesterday--I almost NEVER have symptoms anymore--coughing and wheezing. Boo! Today I can feel it in my sinuses and throat.

But, I still had a good night, thanks to CPAP. I cranked up the humidity and slept well. As soon as I took my mask off I was coughing again, until I used the inhaler.

This may very well get worse, but I'm so grateful for the CPAP. I know there are people here who think their CPAP may cause URI's or they don't want to use it when sick, but this is the first URI I've had in 2 years! Between a much healthier diet and CPAP, I'm rarely ill any more and it seems much more mild when I am ill. And CPAP always calms my asthmatic cough. Before CPAP it would have been a lousy night with multiple awakenings, ending up in the recliner chair miserable and unable to sleep.

Hopefully I'm not speaking "too soon", but I don't fear sleeping when I've got a URI going on anymore thanks to CPAP--except for that occasional "gooey" night when sneezing and nose running makes it difficult to keep the mask on.

Time to go home and load up on bone broth!

Jan,
I hope it is short lived and does not have any complications. I agree with you that I have had less colds and cold like illnesses since I have been on CPAP. I think it does make for a stronger immune system when you get good sleep.

Get better soon.

Karen

I hope you feel better soon. The "crud" seems to be wide spread this season!

I had bronchitis for 3 weeks and had to take antibiotics, steroids, and use a nebulizer. But I never missed a night using my CPAP! I think the humidified air made me feel better.

There is definitely something going around here in the Northeast as well. I started with a bit of chest congestion and throat irritation around Jan. 2 and still have it. It's not getting worse but it's taking its time to get better. Fortunately nasal symptoms have been minimal, I haven't had to use my full face mask.

Good luck.

The few colds I get, I am always glad to get into my mask, as it helps me to breathe more easily. Seldom have to blow my nose in the night.

While the infection rate for the flu is the same as always the main flu this season is a strain of the H1N1 again which is much more dangerous for the healthy adult. Ten people have died here in the province already (double from what it was last week). They reopened the vaccine clinics but they ran out of meds. They also opened a special flu clinic - if you think you have the flu you go there and don't contaminate the other clinics.
