cough is back

Post by dennisofnewport » Sun Jan 12, 2014 9:57 am

Started using my machine two nights ago and now my persistent cough is back. I have been using Claritin and a nasal spry to help keep it under control. I have my humidifier set at 3 and intend to increases that setting every night until I feel less of a dyed out feeling. I am also have a little difficulty with the feeling of air pressure against my throat, it wakes me up and I press the reset button to fall back to sleep. Also, does anyone put anything in there water to help improve there sleep.

What machine? Which mask? What pressures?

A cough like that can be asthma or caused by GERD or even your nasal spray. You need to see a good doctor for it.

It's generally advised to not put anything in the water. Instead people here suggest soaking a cotton ball or pad with the substance (e.g. Vicks, eucalyptus oil) and place it by the machine's intake valve.

Do you take a blood pressure medication........specifically Lisinopril?

If so, that could/would explain the cough.

Look into switching to something like Diovan/Valsartan or Cozaar/Losartan. I've used both and have been on the latter ones for several years. NO COUGH! (like I had with Lisinopril)

All great reply s, I'll update my info on machine and pressure. Upped my humidifier to 4 and last night was much better, High blood pressure? NO Liked the idea of cotton ball in front of filter I will try that. Thanks for the help. New machine = new friends. I will try to be as helpful once I get the hang of it.

Don't know enough about the different machines, but some have a pulse of air designed to detect centrals. Is it a puff of air you're describing or a consistent sensation? Also, how many times a night are you hitting the reset button?

Thank you kteague I do recognize the puffs of air as a signal to regulate the pressure and that is different then the strong pressure I feel in my lungs. I only press the rest button once or twice a night. I have downloaded sleepyhead software and will learn how to read it so I can get a better understanding of what is happening through out the night. I have adjusted the humility setting to 4 and that has help with dry mouth and reduced the cough a little. It is very comforting to have veterans like yourself to talk to. Thanks again.
