NEWBIE QUESTION 2

Post by cesarekim » Sun Jan 12, 2014 6:54 am

Sorry for the stupidity of this but if I am on a CPAP machine and it works, is there ANY advantage to going to a bi-level APAP? In other words, if I get one of the more advanced machines, would I then have to use it as as a CPAP anyway, thereby wasting my money? I need to get a machine quick as I broke mine and for some reason all the used machines I am finding are APAP's or Bilevels. I won't be able to get a sleep study till I go back to Korea in February so my wife is going to buy something and have it shipped to me in Kazakhstan as I cannot buy a new machine without the prescription. Once I do get my sleep study, I will buy a new machine to keep one machine in Kazakhstan and one in Korea. I wonder whether I should buy a CPAP and save or whether there is a real advantage on getting something more advanced.

Thanks for your input.

Hi - Apap's can be set to straight Cpap, but not vice versa, plus Apap's are good for titration - finding the right pressure setting for you at any time versus being stuck with the same pressure forever even if you feel the need (or your software tells you) to adjust pressures whether for good or temporarily. Unless your normal pressure is e.g. above 15 or so, you shouldn't need a bipap, but there are no downsides to having an Apap given it's ability to do Cpap.

Thank you for the reply Julie. Titration appears to be another one of the new words I am learning on this board. With the iSleep I had, there were nights that I felt great when I woke up while other days I just felt so so. I work in Oil&Gas in Kazakhstan and am in different camps and hotels all the time. Power is not necessarily steady over here either. I guess this means that the automated feature could also help compensate for my completely different sleeping conditions and fluctuating power issues? If that is the case, you just sold me .

Thanks again.
