Talking in your sleep?

Post by MitzyG » Thu Jan 09, 2014 12:05 pm

Hi...I thought I had been dreaming, but I think I'm NOT dreaming. I have been told I talk in my sleep. I started cpap and some nights I feel a rush of air out my mouth. It's not all the time. I tried taping my mouth, but one night I thought I had dry mouth/dry skin and kept wiping my face until I realized, it was taped shut.

So, last night I'm pretty sure that I was actually, physically SPEAKING in my sleep (it was part of a dream). I think my leak numbers suggest this and it's "low enough" and infrequent enough that I'm not concerned from that perspective.

Is there a reason I should try to use a strap/tape to prevent speaking in my sleep? I'm a bit concerned that I might panic because I can't open my mouth before I realize it's the tape. PS...no one is listening so I don't worry about "secrets" coming out in my sleep.

From what I know - talking in your sleep is not a big deal - but if you are screaming or moving or thrashing about - then this would be a problem. I have REM Sleep Behavior Disorder - so talking in my sleep is nothing for what I do some nights. The only problem is that with xPAP treatment talking equals a leak. I guess if you look at your data and the leaks are low even around the time that someone said you were talking then I would not worry about it. But, if if gets to involve moving or screaming, then I would talk to your doctor about it.

Many years ago, make that decades, when I was at university, I talked in my sleep. It was in Norwegian and no one understood, lucky for me.
