OT: Brrrrrr! It's cold, d**n cold!

Post by idamtnboy » Tue Jan 07, 2014 11:57 pm

I was just looking at the temperature map on Intellicast.com. It is cold everywhere in the country tonight! In an ironic turn of events it's 4° warmer in Parma, ID than it is in Hammond, LA where I used to live, 27° vs 23°. It's only 41° in Las Vegas. No wonder no one is responding to my Craigslist ad for my Goldwing motorcycle for sale!

How's everyone getting along with the cold? Very many losing power, and thus their CPAP?

I live in California. 60 degrees here and beautiful. Oops... maybe I shouldn't be admitting that.

We do need rain tho!

You definitely should not be admitting that. Says 49er who was an absolute wimp in zero degree weather yesterday and hated all people in warm weather areas.

I kept saying to myself that the cold was all mental. But my brain wasn't buying it.

I felt like a total wimp last month when I was at a cat show in Portland. Temps were in the teens, and the show hall was in need of repair. As a vendor I was up against a wall, and there were openings in the seal between the cement wall and the window. So, we had air coming in on us. Somebody brought a thermometer the second day, and it was 36 on the floor by the wall. We've had snow for that show in previous years, but it was never so cold inside the show hall as that weekend. Next year, I am bringing caulk with me. If they haven't fixed it by then, I will. I had to buy toe warmers for my shoes, and I wished I had brought more layers. I will next year.

I lived in Iowa for 4 years many years ago, and I remember it going below zero sometimes. We were not allowed to play outside unless it was above zero. But I sure don't remember it being more than 10 below. And not for long periods of time. I would not want to have to deal with what some of you are dealing with right now.

I lived in Nebraska back in the 80's and I remember what single-digit and sub-zero temperatures feel like, to say nothing of wind chill. Sending warm wishes to all our freezing friends...

I guess now is not a good to tell you guys that Australia is in the grip of a heat wave with some places having temps topping 50 C.

Where I live its been around 43 C for most of the week & we are expecting a cooler day tomorrow of around 35 C

I think a day at the beach tomorrow is called for, the only drawback is we have to take our own ice

Seriously tho, it is in the news down here & we are praying there will be no more deaths & you get some relief soo.

Hang in there Spring is just around the corner

It's a balmy 16F, very little wind; Half an inch of new snow and still falling.
16 YO grandson wore 2 t-shirts to school today--no coat (HE forgot to wash it);
and hopes to be picked up at the door.
--of course, we will.

As anybody who's watched the weather for more that a few minutes probably knows, the Buffalo area has been under a Blizzard Warning for most of the last 48 hours. They did down grade it substantially overnight to a Lake Effect Snow Advisory, but the south and east suburbs look to pick up several more inches today.

The north metro has not been hit as hard as the southern half of the city, near south suburbs, the eastern suburbs, the airport, and the area along the Lake south and west of Buffalo. Here in Kenmore (just north of the city line) we have gotten some real lake effect, but it's almost impossible to get an idea of how much because of wind the last couple of days. I'd guess, however, that here at our house, we've probably only gotten around 6 or 7 inches total because the bands that have affected us have been a bit intermittent. (And it's still snowing lightly here at the house.) The wind was particularly viscous, and, yes, the Blizzard Warning was well warranted, even for the less hard hit areas. There were driving bans all over the metro area yesterday and over 100 miles of I-90 were closed at the peak of the storm. Parts of I-90 in and around the Buffalo area remained closed over night. And the wind chills and temps have been brutal by Buffalo standards---the airport set a new record low Monday night at -5. (But as someone who spent 5 years in Wisconsin as a kid, I know that "Buffalo brutal" is no where hear as bad as "Midwest brutal" when it comes to temps and wind chill.)

I live in California as well, and have learned to be very quiet during this time. I see we did get rain last night in my area. That's a very good thing.

The pipes in the well house froze and busted. It took all day to get everything fixed and the water back on. My poor husband was blessed enough to have several good friends that came to help him. I just heard last night that there is a propane shortage. That is what we use for heating. We have been blessed with very mild winters for several years so we can't complain about one cold one. I am looking forward to Spring.

We are a balmy 15 degrees this morning in Cleveland. We are supposed to hit 25 today. To put positive spin on it.
Compared to Monday night at -16 without wind chill 25 degrees is 40 degrees warmer.
