Sorta newbie... am I on the right track?

Post by jonnyv » Sun Jan 05, 2014 11:09 am

Long time lurker, first time poster.

Facts at a glance:
- Machine: ResMed S9 AutoSet with humidifier/climateline hose
- Mask: Fisher & Paykel Opus 360 Nasal Pillows mask
- Started therapy: April 2013
- 99% compliant (missed one day! oops!)
- Late 20s, male, over 6', 200-230#

My sleep study last March was definitely very borderline as to whether to prescribe a CPAP -- I think I had something like 5.1 AHI; mild OSA, but the clincher for the doc was that my worst apnea was like 187 seconds long. (Eek! I stopped breathing for 3 minutes?!)

I had a follow-up visit a month later, and he said all was well, therapy was going well, etc. but not much other info.

I've been very faithfully using it. I haven't noticed much difference in terms of - wow, I feel so much more alert or anything of that nature. Nothing obvious to me to show that it is working well. My high blood pressure hasn't really lowered at all (which my general doc had originally thought/hoped the CPAP might assist with). I've done fine sticking with it; the first mask seems ok and I've adapted without issue.

I've since moved out-of-state. I've done a bit of reading here, but am a bit overwhelmed trying to find somewhat similar situations, and would love to get some feedback from the community on my stats as to whether I'm on the right track, and if the therapy appears to be helping in any way. I haven't seen to many others with a low starting AHI. Also, do I need to find a new sleep doctor here, or just continue with what I'm doing?

You are doing very well. It is not unusual for improvements to be subtle and slow.
I realized it had sneaked up on me when I realized I'd just chased my 2 YO grandson a whole block at a dead run--
and was NOT winded!
