Young woman sleeping 20 hours a day

Post by Stormynights » Thu Dec 26, 2013 12:10 pm

We have a woman staying with us that sleeps nearly around the clock. She is in her early 30's. She does have days she can be up longer but these seem to be rare. I want to help but I have my own issues. What would cause someone to sleep that much?

With so little information it's impossible to even guess with any degree of accuracy, but my first thought was depression. But who knows?

That was my first thought. Her X has custody of her children and I know that would depress anyone but she had them for a visit and she slept like that during their visit.

If she has apnea though it may make all the difference, in other words she may be depressed because she's depressed, or it might be depression because of apnea, or it could be a combo, or thyroid, or ??? She needs to be seen though!

There are many possibilities. Some of them are potentially very serious. None of them can be accurately diagnosed over the Internet by medically non-qualified individuals. She needs to have a serious discussion with someone who is medically qualified and can order all of the necessary tests to get to the root of her problem.

Thank you all for the replies. I also think she needs to see a doctor about this. I don't think she realizes how serious this problem is. She does occasionally have good days but far too much sleep days.

Recognize the Symptoms of Narcolepsy

Important information about narcolepsy to help you talk with your doctor.

Narcolepsy is a chronic, life-disrupting neurologic (involving the nerve cells and chemicals in the brain) disorder in which the brain is not able to regulate sleep-wake cycles normally.1 It is estimated that about 1 in 2000 people in the United States have narcolepsy.2

Every patient with narcolepsy has excessive daytime sleepiness.3,8 Yet, patients often do not think that this could be a sign of a sleep disorder.4
Excessive daytime sleepiness is often the first sign of narcolepsy to occur.3 But patients may not use the words “excessive daytime sleepiness” to describe what they’re feeling.4,8,9
Patients may say that they:
Have a hard time staying awake while doing everyday things3
Are tired4,9
Are fatigued4,9
Have difficulty concentrating or focusing8,9
Are forgetful or have poor memory8,9
Are irritable9
Have changes in mood9

Excessive daytime sleepiness can be disabling. This is because of the high risk of falling asleep — or having a “sleep attack” — while doing everyday things,3 such as:
Sitting and reading10
Riding in a car10
Stopped in traffic while driving a car10
Talking to someone2,10

Some patients may do things, but not remember doing them. They may say that they felt like they were “on autopilot.”3
Some patients may take daytime naps, but these naps only help them feel refreshed for a short period of time.2,3

The symptoms of narcolepsy can be hard to spot and can be a lot like symptoms of other disorders.2-4 If you think you may have characteristics of the symptoms of narcolepsy, talk to your doctor.

Under active thyroid will cause depression, fatigue and "stupidity" as my daughter calls it - she knows when her meds are not working anymore because all those symptoms start creeping up.

If she is taking any RX drugs, the dosages may not be appropriate for her current condition.

When I was in my teens, I slept almost 10 days straight. Sometimes sleep can be the least destructive escape from a life that seems out of control. It might be a possibility...
