OT: 4 people resign in a week
OT: 4 people resign in a week
at the supermarket where I work. All were managers/supervisors of varying degrees. Another manager is on sick leave, and the store manager doesn't even know how 'close' the store!
I quit as a supervisor on duty last year, due to the stress of the position. But guess who has been rostered on as supervisor on duty to close the store without being asked? I get all this extra responsibility and yet I'm paid the same as the checkout operators. I have to close the store New Years eve and as we are the only store in town that sells packaged liquor it will be insane.
I wish I could quit, but jobs are darn hard to find around here. Anyway thanks for letting me vent, I'm sure my poor family have had enough of me whinging.

If my FOL came home bitchin' about the "stress" of "working in a supermarket", I'd whack her upside the head with a shovel.

I work as a manager of the technicians that run mechanical ventilators (total life support) and cover 24/7.mgaggie wrote:You ever worked as a manager/supervisor in a supermarket?Sludge wrote:Boy, I'll say.mgaggie wrote: Anyway thanks for letting me vent, I'm sure my poor family have had enough of me whinging.

Does that count?

Not in my opinion. Retail is a different kettle of fish.

OK, in the past worked in a medium-security "correctional center" (Boy, is that ever a misnomer!). Sometimes things got a little crazy. I don't know if that was "stressful", tho.
More like just plain "fear".

Oooh, I got a better one! The time when I "worked" ("volunteered") in a place that got hit with 122mm rockets.
Although I guess that's fear again.

Its hard to describe what I mean. It got to the point where each shift I worked as a supervisor I would be phoned up by the store manager and ripped a new one over something that I apparently did when there was no evidence to show. I will say sometimes I did things wrong, and I admitted that. I would ask staff to do something and they would ignore me and when I eventually went to the SM about this staff member suddenly there were 'customer' complaints against me.
Anyway, I'm not going to argue with you anymore, so go ahead and slap me with a shovel at least its an injury people can see.

That's no reason to be a jerk. Just because somebody hasn't had to fear for their life doesn't mean that their job isn't stressful. I supposed you are one of the people who thinks it is fine to be rude to cashiers and treat them like crap because their job isn't as good as yours, huh?Sludge wrote:Oooh, I got a better one! I never really considered getting hit with 122mm rockets that good of a job.zoocrewphoto wrote:That's no reason to be a jerk. Plus, not a real big job market for that anyway.

Further, if I were to find a job that entailed getting hit with 122mm rockets, I'm sure that I'd have to spend a helluva premium for healthcare under the Obama Plan.Sludge wrote:I never really considered getting hit with 122mm rockets that good of a job.zoocrewphoto wrote:That's no reason to be a jerk. So sorry for your troubles. When one feels trapped in the situation, it seems to make it even more difficult. Hopefully, the management will look into why their management and supervisors are jumping ship.mgaggie wrote:at the supermarket where I work. All were managers/supervisors of varying degrees. Hey mggaggie,
That does sound stressful coming out of the blue like that. It looks as if the Manager of the store created this situation and is making these moves to cover himself instead of being worried about the people that work for him. I can see why the others left.
Is is possible to ask your Manager to have a quick sit-down meeting? Prepare yourself and don't look at this as a reason to vent but as a way to promote yourself. It sounds to me like opportunity is knocking to increase your pay.
Tell your Manager that you are empathetic to the situation he has found himself in, that he can count on your assistance during this rough period. Then, let him know that there is added stress, workload, responsibilities, hours worked, and less time with your family on your end.
Then ask, for the reasons mentioned, would he be willing to recompense you at a higher rate because of your added responsibilities? Let him/her know that this would be good for your morale and those around you. When supervisors have good morale and treat people well, it tends to be infectious.
I know there are a lot of motivators out there but money seems to be at or near the top. Perhaps you will feel better about the added responsibilities if you made more money doing them!
Good Luck and Happy Holidays!

I used to work in retail.
I'd prefer to shovel out horse stalls.
Rottenest job I ever had.
