ResMed Auto Bi-level machine =E0471 ??

Post by Jeannh » Tue Dec 17, 2013 9:54 pm

My sleep doc is willing to order me an auto Bi-level machine, to see if it will address my Sahara-dry mouth. The asst in the office sent me an Rx for an "S9 VPAP", assuring me it was an auto device. When I got the Rx, I could see it was for an E0471, which I think has a back up rate! I have a dry mouth, how does that translate to a backup rate? I called the asst back, who, very annoyed, said she did these every day and the doc WANTED me to have a backup rate.

I want an auto machine that can blow much less air for exhale vs inhale. I think this is the S9 VPAP Auto #36006 (E0470).
Am I nuts-or will the machine they want to order do what I need?

Thanks in advance, Jean

I am thinking it will be this machine and yes it will do what you want with the bilevel pressures...and a lot more and will give the doctor the backup rate he wants.

I don't have centrals to any great degree. The problem we are trying to solve is dry mouth. Doesn't this seem like overkill? Hitting the nat with a sledgehammer?

I am scratching my head on this one myself but I have to assume that the doctor has his reasons.
This type of machine is indeed used to treat centrals but that's not the only use for it. There's a doctor out west who promotes it for UARS even. Dr. Krakow I think was his name.

Did you see this thread?
viewtopic/t94430/The-Journey-from-CPAP- ... o-ASV.html

I don't see how it is going to help the dry mouth unless the breathing rhythm promotes less chance for mouth open or less chance of air entering the mouth from the airway but I don't know much about this type of machine other than the main uses that it was designed for.
Some doctors like Dr Krakow use it for other stuff though.

This machine is really pricey though. I don't know the status of your insurance but co pays for it are likely to be quite a bit more than for the S9 VPAP Auto you were expecting.

When you get a chance you might ask the doctor to explain what he hopes to gain and why. I am curious what his reasoning is...I am sure he has some...just wondering what it might be.
