Lanolin ointment -- where do you put it?

Post by jpek » Tue Dec 17, 2013 12:19 am

Okay, folks. This is going to sound like a stupid question. I'm still trying to make friends with my CPAP. One of the problems I have with my nose pillow mask is that it chaffs (the inside of my nose). Several people have suggested the lanolin ointment and I see it mentioned int he posts here a lot, but am I doing the right thing with it? I put it inside my nostrils. Didn't have the mask on long enough to tell if it helped but when I took it off it felt like my nose was doubly stuffed up. Took a while to flush the stuff out. So, am I using it right?.

Sounds like you used way too much.
When I used it I just put a tiny dab on the end of my little finger and just put a small layer around my nostril and inside just a little bit.
There wasn't any need to flush it out as it was such a tiny amount it wasn't even felt.
Amount the size of the end of a Q tip would take care of both nostrils.

I use a VERY small amount just on the inside edge of each nostril (just at the bottom but inside). It makes my nasal pillows feel comfortable and avoids any chaffing there.

Laninsoh is very safe. Mothers use it on their nipples for breast feeding. It doesn't need to be removed before the baby nurses because it is completely safe.

That means, to me, it is safe to use with nasal pillows. Just a very small amount though and just at the entrance to the nostrils. |t should feel just bit "tacky".

When I used it (before my dog ate it) I pushed about 2mm out of the tube and used a Q Tip to put it around my nares (outside and just inside). It is just a little sheen. Too much acts as a lubricant. I've been on the Swift FX mask for .5 years and was able to stop using Lansinoh after a couple of months. After that, I would use it is my nose got sore or I had a cold.

My Swift FX chewed on my nose for a while when I first started using it. I slowly weaned myself onto it using it for a few hours then going back to my old mask for part of the night or for a night or two.

Now, if I wake up and watch TV or play computer, I'll just leave the mask (and CPAP) on and go for hours and hours with it still on.

Part of the trick was realizing I could leave it rather loose and let it sort of inflate into my nose, but i think my nose skin toughened up a lot, too.
