drooling
drooling
Hello all.My daughter was diagnosed with sleep apnea at age 7(now 15) and husband as well.I am not a newbie to sleep apnea, but was recently diagnosed myself.I love my CPAP , wear it 100% of the time.My problem is I often wake up in the morning covered in drool.(I wear a pilaro nasal pillow) My Dr said it's no big deal because I would feel if I was mouth breathing by the woosh of air out of my mouth.I however wonder if it is effecting the quality of my therapy.Should I consider a chin strap or is the drooling normal, and really not a big deal? It does not bother my sleep at all, just messy when I wake up.

Re: drooling
I use the Tap Pap which has a mouth guard and I pretty much have evidence of a little drooling every morning and sometimes more than a little.
The mouth guard seems to promote a little extra drool over what I used to see with the Swift FX nasal pillows.
My leak graphs look good..no prolonged big leaks and I am sleeping well...so I don't care about a little drool.
Just because the mouth opens a little doesn't mean all the therapy pressure is exiting the mouth. I can yawn and open my mouth easily and not have any air escape at all. So without evidence of massive leaks...I wouldn't be worrying about it and sure wouldn't want to add more stuff to my face.
If your leak reports look good and you are sleeping well...who cares about a little slobber? It washes off the face and off the pillow case real easy.

Re: drooling
Drooling might not be much of a problem unless there is chapping;
in which case, Lansinoh may serve as a healing or protective agent.
(I wonder if a tiny, soft bib over the upper lip would help?)

Re: drooling
I drool inside my FFM. Kind of disgusting but what can you do? It doesn't seem to affect the therapy. I don't know what causes it because I never drooled before starting CPAP.

Re: drooling
I had similar experiences as Sleepy Bob when I was wearing a FFM. I have since switched over to the nasal pillows and have a lot less problems with drooling. I occasionally awake to find drool, but, compared to the FFM, nothing that I would get excited about. I think you'll be fine, just probably not what you want your family to see when you first wake up!

Re: drooling
Thanks for the replies.Other than changing my pillowcase every night I am not going to worry about it too much.
