Noise issues with Respironics DS560
Hi all,
Anyone have any strange buzzing and whistling sounds on inhale and exhale with the Respironics DS560 APAP machine? It's SO annoying I can barely fall asleep or STAY asleep, and it seems to keep getting worse and worse and more and more random.
Thanks,
Z
PS No rainout, filter is clean, Flex is off, settings are 8cm to 10cm, and the machine sits on a hardwood bedside table… have yet to try cushioning the base, but something tells me it's less a harmonic thing and more of a blower concern.

Did you get the machine from a brick and mortar DME store? If so, I would be taking it back and hoping it would act up in their presence.
I assume this noise is new and with it getting worse...that's not normal at all.
How long have you had it? It should still be under warranty if it is a 60 series machine because those weren't released until March of 2012 or so.

It's easy to lay there and listen to yourself breath in and out, that makes the machine do the same only louder. My solution is background noise, I use a recording of nature sounds on a loop playing all night + Badly I run the T. V. too, playing a series I recorded without commercials, as the network breaks volume changes wake me up.
A fan motor or a/c, also drown out your breathing pattern, now if I could just turn off thinking about problems. It used to be when I was working I would replay what I did at work and analyze it, sleep was much better then. Jim

It does seem to me to be a little louder on inhale than my main machine (a over 2 year old 550), but I figured that is due to not using my 560 much as it is currently my travel machine. Perhaps use a fan for white noise (I do year round) and or make use of your pillow(s) to cover up your ears slightly from the inhale/exhale noise. I have been doing this with my pillows for awhile now and except for the Summer time where it gets a little too warm some nights, feels pretty good in the Fall, Winter, and Spring months.

Re: Noise issues with Respironics DS560
It's hard to tell because its so subjective -- there is some noise on inhale and exhale, but I would not call it loud. It's actually rather hard to hear. It's definitely nothing that would keep me up. The vent noise can actually be louder depending on the mask and position, etc.
If your machine is very loud, however, something may be broken.
I wonder if there are any video with audio files on you tube of a normal vs. broken cpap?
Before you do a repair service, just remember all machines make some noise. Loud no but some yes.
Perhaps its the surface you have it on? Maybe vibrating and amplifying the sound?

Re: Noise issues with Respironics DS560
Well, I ended up splitting the machine in two, putting it back together and then resting it on a towel. Lo and behold NO annoying noises from the get go… when I starting coming to in the morning, it was still silent… as a test, I removed the towel… still silent on the hard wood. Makes me wonder if the two halves were simply not seated PERFECTLY… for anyone having this issue, I'd try pushing them together really tight to see if this does the trick.
Thanks all for the advice…

My DS560 seems pretty quiet. I do have it resting on a towel though.

An additional trouble-shooting step might be to plug the hose directly into the blower unit without the humidifier attached. I did that once, very briefly. Now, I use the humidifier without water, but turned off - it makes a great silencer, from what I can tell. Your experience supports that idea.

I just got a new one and both my husband and I are being bothered immensely by the whistling. I do think it is a blower issue as well. I am hoping the provider of my service will replace it. The trouble is they only use this machine.
