strange night - I woke up with the machine off

Post by johnthomasmacdonald » Sat Nov 30, 2013 5:33 pm

I woke up laying on my back in the middle of a really weird nightmare - I go to bed on my side ( always) and i always end up where i start since my arthritis is so severe that any movement usually wakes me up - and i noticed that the machine was off. THis was around 6 hours after I had gone to sleep but when i checked the machine it seemed to have been turned off after 2 hours of therapy with an ahi of 0.00. My first guess was a power outage which is very common here but a check of the computer, tv, microwave and Keurig coffee maker showed that this was not the case.
I also felt very weird, very anxious which was quite unusual for me - i had to read for awhile before going back to sleep. In theory i could have turned the machine off myself but it would have been quite difficult. Any ideas? if there was a severe leak, would the machine after a certain amount of time, turn itself off?

Does your machine have an Auto-On function and is it activated?

Were you still wearing your CPAP mask when you woke up?

Do you think you could have been just breathing through the mask with the machine off?
I only had that happen to me one time and the interval was 45 minutes or so after which the difficulty of sucking through the mask's anti-asphyxiation valve finally woke me up. The machine had gotten unplugged.

Any chance the vent had gotten blocked by blankets, etc. to the extent where you felt (in your sleep) so lousy that you flailed out and hit the button - ending up on your back but not awakening because of the CO2 effect? You never know !

Since hiring the APAP I've had at least two nights where I've woken up and found the machine turned off. No power outage (my alarm clock lights up like a xmas tree after an outage), so I must of turned it off in my sleep. They had set my starting pressure at 4 and I did find it a bit suffocating at times, so my thinking is that I subconsciously turned the machine off because I felt I couldn't get enough air.

Mine has turned off after a massive leak. I think my jaw dropped open and the Titanic sailed through.

it does have an auto-on function but i don't have it on. I was still wearing the FFM but it was riding fairly high up on my face. The machine was still plugged in

It's those blasted aliens again.

I could bet money that you turned it off in your sleep. I wouldn't waste another minute thinking about it. If it happens again in the same manner, then I would explore it further.

You might consider turning the Auto-On function on.
I keep my Auto-Off turned off however.

I think the two possibilities raised, that i turned it off in my sleep while being unaware of it or that the leak was so massive that it turned itself off are both possible - I'd prefer it being the leak since i'd be a bit weirded out if i'm doing things in my sleep that i'm not aware of - while i can reach the machine from where i'm sleeping, it would have been quite an effort given my arthritis - i have a hell of a time getting up in the morning

i did once sleep walk when i was around 15 - i just walked downstairs to the kitchen, filled a glass of water and then poured it out in the sink - my brother saw me and was trying to talk to me when he realized i was asleep - he's 9 years older than me and played basketball for Fordham at the time yet it freaked him out and he was afraid to sleep with me in the room ( we shared a bedroom) for quite a while

My poor dog is testament to what people can do in their sleep, a couple of times I've kicked her out of bed (woken up when I've heard the thump) another time I tried to squash her with my knee as I was dreaming I had to squash a giant bug. A few times I've turned off my ipod without remembering (I just leave it on continuous loop).

You've raised what might be the actual cause - my dog. I have a 10 year old german shepherd that i took in as a rescue when a neighbor died and the dog ended up in the local shelter about to get put down. Now he follows me everywhere around the house ( which is not great given the arthritis and my need to keep stepping over him all day long). Yesterday i spent a fair amount of time laying in bed working on a paper from my laptop and he kept getting up on the bed from the area where my head ( and the machine on a chair next to the bed) is located. It's a twin bed but somehow he makes himself fit in on the bed. I'm thinking now he might have tried to do this the night the machine went off.

Your dog thinks he's your physical therapist.
The dear thing is afraid that if you don't get up and move around, you might freeze up.

My neighbor takes him for long walks everyday since i can only manage taking him around the block ( i'm on crutches). Prior to her walking him, he was like clockwork, he always had a bowel movement before we even got off the property. and he went EVERY time i walked him ( 3 times a day). Now he never goes with me. My neighbor is convinced that he senses that i'm not well and he saves it up for her. For example i walked him around the block last night at 1 am ( i had fed him at 7pm - with added spaghetti and tuna fish for the holiday) yet he never went. Then when my neighbor took him this morning at 11am, he went 3 times.

I find it hard to believe that they could be this smart but i really can't explain it any other way

My dog used to turn my machine off during the night. Once she discovered that she liked the exhaust she would turn it on during the day and lay next to my mask. I had to change to auto on and off. Dogs are smarter than we give them credit. I believe they think we are the dumb animals and they have to take care of us.
