does smoking effect cpap treatment
does smoking effect cpap treatment
ive recently started to have problems with my cpap treatment..all was well and i started to smoke again, only a couple a day as i had quit in November last year when i got my deviated septum repaired and was not allowed to smoke for 3 weeks..so then i had decided to quit..
i think the answer is simple because every time i start smoking i feel like im my sleeping gets worse.
and also the cold turkey stage of when u quit is also very stressful and hard to sleep.
ive quit again now on my third week..today i feel a bit better..
has anyone ever experienced problems with cpap therapy when they have smoked or quit
i am not asking for anyone to give me the go ahead to smoke again..i have to stay of the cigarettes for good
i am just worried what could be causing me to be like this after i was feeling all better when i first started the therapy.

Re: does smoking effect cpap treatment
Once you stop smoking you will have the smoke smell in your CPAP for a L O N G time. You will smell the stale smoke for many months. The smoke smell is almost impossible to get out.

I've never smoked in my house..my wife doesn't smoke so I used
To go on the balcony...I'm was never really much of a smoker..
But I believe the couple of weeks cold turkey messed with my sleep and slowly
I'm starting to feel better..
Lets hope it lasts because the last couple of weeks were hard

You restarted smoking after the first 2 weeks? Sorry, bad decision; the worst part was nearly over.
You may kick yourself as many times as you like.

I didn't notice any difference when I was smoking or not. Also I've never smelled the stale cigarette smell on my cpap or my mask (but I didn't smoke in the house).
I now use the e-cig. LOVE IT.

I've never been a smoker but I've never met one who could smell the stale cigarette smoke on and around themselves.echo wrote: . . I've never smelled the stale cigarette smell on my cpap or my mask (but I didn't smoke in the house). . .
It's one of those things about odors in our environment that are so common that our brains filter them out and we can't smell them any more.
The lovely chemicals in cigarette smoke do nasty things to your lungs' ability to exchange gases. So, when you have apneas, the effect may be greater on you than on someone who has never smoked or who last smoked quite some long time ago. The end stage for heavy smokers is emphysema and/or COPD.

I haven't smoked in almost a year and I can smell a smoker a mile away now (it makes me gag). I still can't smell it on my equipment, but I do smell it e.g. on old clothes that were in storage.JDS74 wrote:I've never been a smoker but I've never met one who could smell the stale cigarette smoke on and around themselves.echo wrote: . . Re: does smoking effect cpap treatment
I don't wish to be offensive or hurtful, but people who smoke and think they don't smell are laboring under an illusion. You may think you don't smell but …
To the rest of the world, smokers stink and most people can feel the pinch in their nostrils the moment a smoker enters a room - their skin stinks; their hair stinks; their breath stinks. And no amount of soap and water or mints or gum or mouthwash can erase it or cover it up. It's a 24 hour round-the-clock stink, and it's coming from inside you.
Consistent long-term quitting will eventually clear the stink out of your body. Nothing else will.
Sorry.
Regards, Nate

Wow we ended up on a debate about ciggerette smell..
Now that I've quit if anyone enters the room who smokes I can smell it
Straight away..
I think the problems I am having r due to nicotine withdrawel
Which is effecting my treatment...it's not so bad today so maybe
The worse part is over...

That would be my first thought also. Simple drug withdrawal messing with sleep quality.Guest wrote: I think the problems I am having r due to nicotine withdrawel

Smoking keeps your airways CONSTANTLY inflamed. Inflammation causes swelling and mucus production. It stresses your heart through vaso-constriction shrinking of your arteries. So, you don't breathe as well, you do perfuse your tissues with oxygenated blood, your blood is lower in oxygen.....can you see where I am getting here? Yes, it's bad for you and has the potential to worsen your apnea and make your sleep ineffectual.

Re: does smoking effect cpap treatment
I haven't been in for a while and thought I'd see what happening. I've just copied one of my old posts and this it:
I had company at the house last week overnight 2 nights. The gentleman of the couple is a smoker. He has always been allowed to smoke in the house, in the kitchen with the fan going.
The day they arrived he forgot to turn on the fan and so there was smoke throughout the house. No big deal to an ex-smoker right? Normally I wouldn’t have cared. When I got up the following morning (my normal range on CPAP seems to be 0.0 – 2.5) it was 7.0. A little alarming to me but I wasn’t sure if it was really the smoke.
Off they go for a few days, the range becomes normal again and then they’re back for one night again. Before they get to the house, this time I’m traveling in a vehicle with them. I’m sitting in the back, he’s smoking in the front…window cracked, stuck in traffic…getting lots of smoke. Now to the house where he continues to smoke. I’m not saying anything because I’m very curious if it’s actually the smoke. Monday morning I wake up and immediately (as always) check my machine and pretty much didn’t believe what I was seeing so I went and got my glasses…13.8. Oh oh.
Monday night windows were opened to air out the house for a while. This morning it was 0.2 and smoking is forever banned in my living space!

I have always been very tolerant of smokers' rights, but I have never allowed smoking in my house or in my car because of the lingering smell.kismet210 wrote:smoking is forever banned in my living space! [/i]
When people who came to my house asked where the ashtrays were, I would tell them they were on the patio.
Why do you keep them on the patio, they would ask.
My reply was because that is where the smoking area is.
I no longer even have ash trays.
The smoking area has been moved to anywhere other than where I am.
