Happy Chanukah
Happy Chanukah
Especially for the Jewish folks amongst us.
Did you know this:
What a great combination Turkey and Latkes!!
Chanukah will be on Thanksgiving this year, for the first time ever, and never again!
We will be celebrating the first day of Chanukah on Thanksgiving, so expect turkey and latkes on the table. This is the only time it will ever happen, read below to see the explanation!!!
Thanksgiving is set as the fourth Thursday in November, meaning the latest it can be is 11/28. 11/28 is also the earliest Chanukah can be.
The Jewish calendar repeats on a 19 year cycle, and Thanksgiving repeats on a 7 year cycle. You would therefore expect them to coincide roughly every 19x7 = 133 years. Looking back, this is approximately correct - the last time it would have happened is 1861.
However, Thanksgiving was only formally established by President Lincoln in 1863. So, it has never happened before.
Why won't it ever happen again?
The reason is because the Jewish calendar is very slowly getting out of sync with the solar calendar, at a rate of 4 days per 1000 years!
This means that while presently Chanukah can be as early as 11/28, over the years the calendar will drift forward, such that the earliest Chanukah can be is 11/29. The next time Chanukah falls on 11/28 is 2146, which is a Monday. Therefore, 2013 is the only time Chanukah will ever overlap with Thanksgiving!!!
Of course, if the Jewish calendar is never modified in any way, then it will slowly move forward through the Gregorian calendar, until it loops all the way back to where it is now.
So, Chanukah would again fall on Thursday, 11/28...in the year 79,811. Given our trajectory with global warming, it is fair to say humans won't be here then. And if there are no humans, the holidays will be cancelled.
So on November 28th 2013, enjoy your turkey and your latkes. It has never happened before, and it will never happen again

Happy Chanukah to you and your family! Do you eat your latkes with applesauce or sour cream? Of course if you're kosher you can't eat them with sour cream and turkey together!

Now I need to go out and buy some Yukon Golds. Shred them, skin and all for my Ukie style potato pancakes.
Put onions in the batter, and lots of sour cream (Smetana) on the side. Yum!

I eat them with both applesauce and sour cream. One with applesauce and the next with sour cream... and so on and on and on.
Happy Chanukah to you and your family, Dori... and of course to Avi and his family too... and to everyone of the Jewish faith.
To the others, have a wonderful Thanksgiving - and stay tuned for fabulous leftover recipes from Dori

Re: Happy Chanukah
I myself don't keep Kosher but my family in Israel, does. About eating Turkey and Latkes covered with sour cream, observant Jews would NOT do it.
It's not written clearly in the Torah in the old testament Bible.
The prohibition of combining meat and milk:
The Torah says: "You may not cook a young animal in the milk of its mother" (Ex.23:19). From this, it is derived that milk and meat products may not be mixed together. Not only may they not be cooked together, but they may not be served together on the same table and surely not eaten at the same time. This rule is scrupulously upheld in observant Jewish households, even in the handling of utensils, which are carefully separated into “fleishig” (meat) and “milchig” (dairy) and separately labeled. By strict observance of these laws, they become an everyday habit. After meat meals, one must wait one, three, or six hours – depending on one’s custom - before eating dairy. After dairy consumption, no interval is required before meat may be eaten.
The Torah does not say anything about mixing (eating) dairy products with Kosher Fowl:
Fowl/Poultry and their derivatives:
Some birds may NOT be eaten. These include the eagle, owl, swan, pelican, vulture, and stork - as well as their brood and clutch of eggs (Lev. 11:13-20).
Only birds that are traditionally considered kosher, such as the goose, duck, chicken, and turkey, may be eaten.
Kosher Locusts?
The Torah states in Parshat Shemini:
"Every flying insect that uses four legs for walking shall be avoided by you. The only flying insects with four walking legs you may eat are those with knees extending above their feet, [using these longer legs] to hop on the ground. Among these you may only eat members of the red locust family, the yellow locust family, the spotted gray locust family and the white locust family. All other flying insects with four feet [for walking] must be avoided by you."
Red locust:

P.S. I am back to say that I have been thinking about those Locusts that are OK to eat. The Bible (old testament) was written centuries after the Israelites spent 40 years in the desert (Sinai), after they left Egypt. They did not have anything to eat there. So God gave them the Manna which was Locusts. Who ever wrote the Torah, later, had no choice but include the Locust as Kosher to eat.

Re: Happy Chanukah
Last minute scramble: I'm putting Latkes on my T-day menu Guess I'll have to go online and get a recipe unless you've got one Avi123? I'm thinking the day after Thanksgiving. Latkes with turkey inserted plus a bit of gravy to top it off. No milk products in that combo if you leave the butter out of the gravy. Oh yes, plus a few sprinkles of chopped fresh sage sprigs.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
Re: Happy Chanukah
Not to worry, Avi... I have no intention whatsoever of eating vultures or insects anyway.

Sir... if you have a Costco near you, they have already prepared yummy latkes in the frozen section of the store. Seriously, you can "almost" fool the best of them (except Dori ), they are that good!
