REMstar auto giving me C-9 error until I pulled my smartcard

Post by greggray24 » Fri Nov 22, 2013 6:35 pm

It is an old machine - model 1007381. I am getting the C-9 error and loud beeping a few minutes after I start using the machine. I read up and see that it is an error message related to the smart card. I tried the erasor trick but no joy. It seems to work without error if I pull the card and leave it out. Could the card be full or something? Is there anything critical on the card (like my settings) that I am missing out on by operating without it?

Any help would be most appreciated!

No...there's nothing on the smart card that will affect your settings.
You can still buy the smart cards for the Respironics machines
Cpap.com have them for around $12 I think. Maybe next time you order something or when they have free shipping available (which they do fairly often) you could pick one up.

I had the same thing happen in early 2012. I reformatted the card and it has worked OK after that. On the other hand, I have accumulated quite a few spares for future use.

C-9 SMARTCARD_WRITE_CONFIRM_FAIL Card is corrupt and should be reprogrammed. Otherwise, replace card.

I would also recommend cutting a "card" about the size of the smart card from the back of an old legal pad and soaking it with some alcohol in the approximate area where the contacts engage the gold seal on the card.......then slide it back and forth in the card slot to try to clean the contacts in the machine. That procedure also works with the card reader. Wouldn't hurt to also get some "canned air" (it's available at Walmart in the electronics section) and blow it in the slot to clean any possible dust buildup from the slot.

Thanks for the fast response! So the smart card is just for accumulating data? I have to admit that in all the years I've been using this machine I've never looked (nor has anyone else) at the data on the card. Sounds like I have not had the best care from the providers of the machine nor have I done a very good job of taking care of myself. I just figured that since it is an auto CPAP that it would take care of itself. Guess I need to read up on heat I have been missing. I've got a smart card reader on my work laptop. I'll have to see what I can do to fix the card and start actually using it.

Any recomendations for software for formatting and reading the card?

I gather from your reply that you've never downloaded the data from the card.......or have the "special" card reader to do that.
You would have to have the Mako/Infineer DT-3500 card reader to read or format it. That's the ONLY ONE that will work. You would also need the Encore Pro software to download or format/reformat it.........or the "MyCPAP" card utility software to format/reformat it.
The DT-3500 card readers can be had for about $50 - $60. The software can typically be acquired "free".

If it's in "wrong", the error is "C-1". His is a "C-9" error.

I think his options are to get a different card or to just leave it out and HOPE the therapy is working.

Leaving the card out is the equivelnt of what I have been doing. I've been just "hoping" the therapy has been working for the last 15years. I'm feeling pretty foolish right now to be honest with you guys. Also a bit annoyed that none of the fine medical people who have been collecting my copayments and selling me equipment helped me understand what I should be doing (or what they should be doing). Anyway, really appriciate all the feedback. It think I've found the place to help me take better care of myself...

Welcome to the forum.
I think you're right. I've been here about 8 1/2 years.
You have a good, data-capable machine. I'm also very fond of that generation of Respironics machines and have quite a few of them myself. The parts and software are still available and they still give good therapy.
