Military CPAP?

Post by hyperlexis » Mon Nov 11, 2013 5:49 pm

This sounds kind of crazy but does the military offer CPAP machines to soldiers etc, or does apnea render someone totally unable to be sent to a war zone, etc.?

If yes, is there a military spec CPAP machine/masks? Battery power supply for the field?

Just interested.

Obviously, there are a lot of military jobs where dependence on an extra piece of equipment would be hazardous.
Apnea, whether treated or not, would probably rule out any assignment involving deployment to a hostile area.
I can imagine many tasks where using cpap would not be a problem, but only the military could say if they would allow it.

We have a member who was on active duty and was put on cpap much to the relief of his men(according to him). He just came home and started a thread about getting settled in Forida.

I seem to remember a couple of posts about this. It seemed the military somewhat had their head screwed on straight in that they wouldn't force a serviceman who was CPAP dependent to go somewhere he couldn't use his CPAP. In fact, I think one guy was somewhat upset that they wouldn't allow him to take an assignment where he couldn't use the CPAP.

If true, that's a good thing. A sleep deprived apneac could be a danger to himself and his fellow servicemen. Even if the danger was just something like falling asleep at the wheel.

Of course, in the military, YMMV.

My B/F was a LT COL in the ARMY 3 yrs ago.
He was diagnosed with apnea and given a
BPAP and was then shipped off to Afghanistan. Where
he spent 12 months serving. He
was close to retirement and didn't want to
push the system....

They probably have little if any provision for xpap in a fox hole (do they even have those now?), but most quarters have electricity.
