What causes these? Six or eight per night. 4-year old nephew.

Check out this Mayo Clinic web page.

If a sleep study is ordered, you might check and see if a parent can stay during the study. Night Terrors can be pretty bad when you are little and in a very strange environment and all wired up.

My sympathies.

I'm not clear on the difference between nightmares and night terrors. Maybe you could enlighten us from your personal experience with a child (or the parent's stories, more specifically). I'm not being obstinate, I'd just would like more info from your perspective since it's an interesting topic.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

My 4 year old has them...and also has OSA. The difference is he doesn't remember them and they occur in the first few hours of sleep. My son becomes agitated, open eyes not really seeing you. Nothing calms him down. He doesn't even know I'm there. A treatment is to wake them before the time it usually happens. My son actually had them in the sleep lab. I was relieved, in a way, that the arousals were related to respiratory events and that there was some explanation that we could, perhaps treat. My heart goes out to your nephew's parents. It is an exhausting road. Please let me know if I can help.

Also there are some studies that suggest night terrors can be related to OSA. Despite this, my concerns were repeatedly dismissed by his pediatrician as something he would just "grow out of."
