Newbie with humidity issues

Post by TyG49+2B » Fri Nov 01, 2013 9:53 pm

I am new new new to c-pap and sleep apnea and have been reading many postings here to get help. Thanks to all who post with answers -you are saving lives of people who are ready to give up because they can't take the MACHINE! I seem to have the opposite problem of everyone I have read here as I am suffering from the heat of the machine and can't get cool enough or humidified enough because I can't stand the heat. I have my home heating set at 68 degrees - I have a room humidifier and my Respironics machine set at 0 for heated humidity. I understand will get more humid at higher hot settings but can't take em! I have dry nose and mouth so bad I have sores on my tongue. Have tried all the tips here of Ayr saline gel in nostril and swabbing mouth with olive oil-helps for a few minutes but that is all.I am trying to use Amara full face mask but am switching out to Liberty mask soon to try to adjust to that-every posting seems to think that will be cooler and less claustrophobic. Should mention i am 63 years old and on many medications and several that can cause my dryness issue -but can't stop the meds so need to have another direction to go. Please -can anyone tell me how to get cooler humidity with this machine?

Which model Respironics machine do you have?
Look on the bottom of the blower unit for a 3 digit number on a little sticker. Will probably have DS or REF in front of the 3 digits.
Tell us those 3 digits.

Hopefully you will have one of the new 60 series machines and can get the heated hose that is optional.
Don't freak out when I mention heated hose. It allows for humidity and air temperature to be 2 independent settings.
There's 3 settings for humidity and 5 settings for hose air temperature. A setting of 1 in the air temp just warms the air 4 degrees above room temp.
On the humidity settings..there are 3..1 being 70%, 2 being 80% and 3 being 90%.
So you can use the setting of 1 for air temperature and still get added humidity of your choosing.

The heated hose has a black end to it at the humidifier connection. It's an option and requires a special power supply and lid to the humidifier.
If you don't have the heated hose option already..it can be added in the form of an upgrade kit. DMEs know about it but you can also buy it for $75 from cpap.com if the DME doesn't want to supply it.

Thank you ! I was wondering how you all got your equipment info listed on the bottom of postings also? I have a Philips Respironics REM Star Auto A-flex System 1
I read the information on bottom after REF as 560P. Do they have a refrigerated hose also ? That would be lovely for me ! LOL! Thank you for any information that will help me !

How to post your equipment in your profile explained here
wiki/index.php/Registering_Equipment_in_User_Profile

Since you have the 560 machine your choice would be
PR System One 60 Series Auto CPAP
and the humidifier is the same on as mine
PR System One 60 Series heated tube humidifier with heated tube (even if you don't have a heated hose yet...it's the only choice that will work with your machine)

Yep the 560 has the heated hose option available. The 60 part of the model number denotes the heated hose capable model.
If you had told us 550...that is the 50 series machine and nothing about it is compatible with the 60 series machines.

No...no one has a refrigerated hose. Most people wouldn't want one. When the air is too cold going up my nose I get "ice cube nose" and it is actually a bit painful and wakes me up a lot and anything that wakes me up a lot isn't going to last around me.

You don't want a refrigerated hose! It's blowing that air into your lungs and you could literally give yourself pneumonia or something worse. Find some other way to stay cool, but that's not it.

I don't like the heated humidity and (other than a couple of times when I started this therapy) have never used it.
I use cool, "passover" humidification year round.....water in the HH tank but the heat turned completely off. When I open a gallon jug of distilled water, I fill up six 20 oz. plastic pop bottles I've kept for this purpose and put them on a lower shelf in the door of the refrigerator and top off my tank from those. I live in a dry mountain area and the air flow picks up enough moisture to provide my nasal passages with enough humidity.
Works for me.
