Custom fit masks...

Post by nomad » Sat May 20, 2006 8:54 pm

I did a quick search and found a little bit from a few months back about people discussing some custom stuff possibly from Hans Rudolph. Is there such a thing as a true custom fit (molded) mask... something where they make either a mold or digital image of your face? If so, are they any good and what are the names of the companies doing this? I realize your face shape changes slightly as you toss and turn, but a custom mask has to be a better starting point than the mass market masks (say that fast 10 times ) If not, is this even a possibility in the near future? If they have things such as custom molded dental appliances, custom molded hearing aids/ protectors and custom molded artificial limbs for amputees, it seems they should easily be able to make a mask for us. Or is all of this just a new-bee's wishful thinking?

edit: I should clarify... I'm looking for a full face mask that goes under my chin kind of like the F&P 431.

Hans Rudolph

I actually tried a Hans Rudolph today (That's right, Saturday, at my DME, InterMountain HealthCare HomeCare, who spent two HOURS with me getting it right) in an effort to get a FF mask as a back-up "just in case" my beloved Swift doesn't work if someone socks me in the nose. I found the Hans Rudolph very comfortable in fit on my face WITHOUT pressure, and a leakin' sieve with pressure. And, for a man, it requires a man VERY SECURE IN HIS MASCULINITY, since the headgear IS EXACTLY a garter belt. NO KIDDING. Wound up with a Fisher&Paykel HC431A, which wasn't great, but was better than an UMFF, a ComfortFull 2, and the Hans Rudolph, which fit SO NICE without pressure, but was a disaster with pressure.

Hope this helps.

My machine is set on 11. With the F&P 431, I get a bit of annoying leaking under my chin which blows on my throat waking me up. The only way I can get rid of this is to crank the mask down on my face which leaves red indentions for a good hour or two after I take it off in the mornings.

So far Hans Rudolph digitized mask is a nasal mask. One of the things to remember is that the facial tissues are much less firm than an ear canal for instance. The ear canal will maintain its shape regardless of position. Facial tissues "shift" somewhat from upright to lying down and in turning side to side. Age and weight will also factor into how much the face changes shape as you move into different positions. I don't know how the HR designers are dealing with position/contour changes.
