Resmed S9 ClimateLine tubing: Should tube feel warm?

Post by jimboom » Fri Oct 25, 2013 9:14 am

I am getting rain out unless I set my S9 to 30C. The air that reaches me is cool/cold and I think it aggravates my recurring bronchitis. The room is cold since my wife, whom I cherish, is menopausal and needs it that way to sleep.

The ClimateLine tube does not feel warm (I think I remember it being nicely warm to the touch. I also think I remember the air coming out nicely warm even in the Winter.) but my CPAP supplier says it is working. I don't get any fault warnings so that is why she thinks it is working. When I tell her what I remember about the line being warm and the air blowing warm, she said, "No, that is not the way it works." I have a distinct memory of lying in my bed one cold Canadian winter night after turning up the S9 to 30C feeling all toasty with the warm air blowing in.

I have replaced the tube and even used one from the CPAP supplier, but things are still cold.

I have been reading all sorts of comments for hours on the Internet but need confirmation that the tube should indeed feel warm. They did replace my humidifier unit, but that did not help. I think they should replace the main unit since it is still on warranty.

Any help would be really appreciated. I think the cold is aggravating my bronchitis which means I'm off work too much and can't support my family.

My ClmateLine never really feels warm, but the air coming out is a toasty 80/26 degrees. You replaced your humidifier (have you checked to make sure the bottom of the water tank is warm after the unit has been on a while?). I would suspect the ClimagteLine before the blower unit if the tank is warm. If the tank is cold then the power is not getting to the humidifier from the blower unit. This is just me thinking out loud about the situation. I have no training or inside knowledge of the S9. YMMV

When your machine has been running for an hour or so, check the water temp to see if it heated. Failure to heat could be the main unit failing to deliver power.

To prevent rainout, the hose temp needs to get above 70 degrees or so, higher if you are trying to get to 80% RH in the air. So it should feel somewhat warm.

If your S9 has a pre-heat mode, perhaps you could try that at the DME's to demonstrate what is happening.

A related topic: Whenever I put my hand around my Climateline hose (no wisecracks from the peanut gallery) it never seems very warm. However, if I immediately touch the wall above my bedstead, it is clear that the hose is indeed many degrees warmer. Sometimes it's helpful to have a basis of comparison.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I raise or lower the temperature setting depending on how cool/warm the room is.

My tank is indeed warm and pre-heats the water and the supplier replaced it just in case.

The air coming out of my hose is cold. I also get rainout if I set it to full humidity 6 and 24C (75F). The room is about 17C (63F).

I think my hose does not get warm enough. I might get a thermostat to measure the temperature coming out.

I even tried putting a section of copper pipe insulation on it one night. I had a 4 foot section of the 1cm thick foam which pit nicely over the line. Still, it the air was not warm even though I had it set to 30C (86F).

I remember the air coming out warm. But now its never been warm. Tried three different hoses. I think its the programming or something with the computer unit. Does that make sense?

I would also wonder about the electrical connection at the humidifier since 3 different hoses don't want to warm up.
Anyway you can try a different humidifier?
