Mine will shut off by itself, but I prefer to hit the off button.
I like having it turn on by itself, though.

That's what I normally do, however, the unit is normally on my nightstand within easy reach, but the other day, our waterbed mattress sprung a bad leak, and to make matters worse, somehow some water got around the safety liner, causing some things to get wet. I got a new mattress and liner, and everything is drying out, but it will be a few more days until I have it set up again, and it heats up. So we're sleeping in another room on a futon, with no nightstand. The CPAP is on the floor, behind the futon (so I won't step on it), and it just would have been slightly more convenient to have it shut itself off. And now you know... the rest of the story.

Followup -

I got up a couple of times last night, and to my surprise, it shut off automatically. When I got up this morning it didn't.
I checked the pressure chart for the night, and it was consistent with my testing. The pressure was over 8 when it shutoff, and it was 7 when it didn't.
Guess I can put this issue to bed.

Just out of curiosity, when you disconnect from your circuit, are you disconnecting from the swivel at the end of the short tube from the mask? Or are you taking the mask off?

What's puzzling me about this thread, is that your auto off is working at 8 or above, but not at the lower pressure.

I'm still thinking there is resistance somewhere. Is the tubing non-smooth bore maybe? For some reason there isn't enough flow to make the machine "think" you are not at the end of the tube.

I just talking about taking off the mask, but as Bostow pointed out a few posts back (and I verified), the troubleshooting section of the manual clearly says that one of the reasons the unit won't shut off when the mask is removed is "The patient is using a nasal pillows mask with a set pressure less than 7 cm H2O.". I'm guessing there's an internal adjustment that is making mine work closer to 8 than 7, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

Apparently, this limitation has been around for some time.
"There are some CPAP masks that will not engage the Auto-On / OFF function. Example - Mirage Swift FX - Nasal Pillows and CPAP Full Face Masks."
(this from the cpap help desk)

Not being able to use Auto On/Off with a full face mask was corrected in the internal software version 0603.

Apparently Nasal Pillows and a pressure of less than 7 still is a problem per the above posts.

I have never used, tried to use or set any of my machines to utilize the "Auto Off" option .
I definitely do NOT want my machine shutting off during the night if I encounter a Large Leak. I want my machine to keep blowing to provide therapy air, even if it's not optimal.

I always make sure I turn it off before I remove my mask and that I have my mask in place before starting my machine.

Just got brand new S9 Auto Set. The Auto ON works fine, turning on within 3 breaths whether plugged directly into the S9 or into the H5i humidifier when it's attached. PROBLEM --Auto OFF does not work when the tube is plugged into H5i humidifier. Auto OFF works fine without humidifier attached -- turns off within about 15 seconds but only when tubing is plugged directly into S9 (humidifier NOT attached). Different issue -- Settings for Mask Type include Nasal and Pillow but no setting for Nasal Pillow. What's the difference in settings Nasal and Pillow? What setting to use for ResMed Swift LT with Nasal Pillows? What is Nasal Ultra? I might return this S9 if Auto OFF won't work H5i humidifier. Without that feature working, the S9 is no advantage for me over my Escape II or S8 machines.

The "Pillow" selection is for nasal pillow type masks. This would be the selection for the Swift LT

Regarding the Auto Off...what pressure are you using and are you using EPR?

I have had my cpap machine for several years now and until recently it had no problems. it would shut off when I took it off. I also had a heated tube that I replaced once and now the second one will not work when installed, some kind of hose connection problem, mite need to replace again. any ay. when I take it off I take hose loose from nasal mask and sometimes it will stop and sometimes not. I have had to open the S9 door and take reservoir out, couple times I have had to unplug. never dawned on me to just push button. the heated hose was auto adjusted and the standard hose I have tried different settings, highest it goes is 5.

Set your hose type to slim line.

My S9 series CPAP will not start. It just flashes " S9 series" on the screen. Any ideas on why?

sounds like a power brick problem.

Have you tried unplugging everything and then replugging? The machine may reboot itself.
